On this forum, that record makes me a radical lib.

The question that Pubs want to know the answer to is: "What have you done for me lately?"

1. FDR, I definitely don’t like much of his New Deal, borderline socialism but it’s his WW2 leadership that gets my attention. We could not have asked for a better wartime leader. On that alone he would have my vote.

2. Truman, closed the deal on WW2, stood our ground against the Soviets in Europe, Marshal plan, he was a true world leader.

3. JFK, a Cold War hero. Got those missles out of Cuba, kept the soviets in check all with no war. Space program too.

Those are my favorite 20th century democrat presidents. Sad how the quality of the last two presidents has been so low when we look at the great leaders of the past. No matter your politics you never doubted the ability of the likes of FDR, Truman, Eisenhower, JFK, Reagan, Bush 1 and 2 as well as Clinton. Even carter, LBJ and Nixon with all thier issues were far more qualified and capable than what we deal with today. OBama was awful, trump is downright embarrassing. Why can we not get back on track? The quality in the presidents being discussed in this thread are what we should demand, we should never let clowns become president.
I visited his Presidential library in Missouri about 4-5 years ago. At that point the library was pretty worn...not that well cared for....which was sad. The other Truman properties I visited there in Independence were in pretty good shape. It was just the library that had seen better days.

DH worked for Carter, too.

IMO, Carter was defeated by Elenor Smeal yapping at him for 4 years.

Then there was Ted Koppel on tv everyday counting the days the hostages were being held.

Then there was the Kennedy's. The Republicans were upset that Carter gave the canal back to Panama and told them to turn down the thermostat and put on a sweater.

People IMO, rarely look at the whole situations surrounding candidates or POTUS. They get blamed for what happens during their term in office because voters do not see that policies have unintended consequences.

I was in elementary school when carter was president. Listening to the news count the days our people were in Iran I always wondered why President Carter could not get them out, why were not at war with them for this etc. I believe even at that young age that event colored my view toward Carter and toward democrats, I learned they were weak and pushovers. Carter was the best intention president, but he just could not handle the job regardless of how nice he was or how smart he was. He was a good man, just not a leader.

Policies have unintended consequences. Why do you suppose the Iranians were so pissed off? We had been meddling in their business for many years.

Carter, against his better judgement, allowed the Shah into the USA for medical treatment. You can thank Henry Kissinger for that.

We are kinda in the same situation now. Half of us think there is not a thing wrong with Putin, the other half thinks he is almost in control of our POTUS and Republican party. Imagine the response should he be disposed at home and welcomed into the White House.

In all of American history, just one Democrat I can think of - Grover Cleveland.

And the most recent Republican president would be Calvin Coolidge. Last Republican name in general? Jack Kemp.

Basically, if they don't walk the small government, less spending, less intrusion walk...I refuse to consent to be governed by them. The list of people in both parties that have actually walked that walk is very, very small. It's one, maybe two people every century.

No mention of Reagan and Central America? A bit closer to home....

"genocide was indeed an option in Guatemala, supported materially and morally by Ronald Reagan’s White House. Reagan famously took a hard line in Central America, coming under strong criticism for supporting the contras in Nicaragua and financing counterinsurgency in El Salvador.

The White House was less concerned with the massacres than with their effectiveness, or with countering the bad publicity.

His administration’s actions in Guatemala are less well known, but even before his 1980 election, two retired generals, who played prominent roles in Reagan’s campaign, reportedly traveled to Central America and told Guatemalan officials that “Mr. Reagan recognizes that a good deal of dirty work has to be done.”

Given Putins popularity, this isn't comparable to Iran.

What people must realize is that MANY Russians are similar to Putin. He's no outlier. Their ugly history has made brutes of a lot of the people...whether an oligarch or not.

A better relationship might be US Citizens to Trump (Iranians to Shah) where most Americans disapprove of the dude.
