So if he stopped using food stamp card the starving people would all have plenty to eat. That sounds pretty simple.
If this man had earned his money, and been a self made millionaire, liberals would be going bonkers.. I'm really shocked at all of the people defending him getting a government "bailout", I mean "subsidy".
He's right. He shouldn't feel bad because it's not his fault. It's the fault of the system that still permits someone with his assets to use food stamps. They're the ones who make and enforce the regulations that let this happen. People should be upset at the system and demand that it be changed, not at this man.
What this news crew SHOULD be doing, is interviewing the Michigan DHS and running an exclusive report on how they facilitate abuse of a system that was created to support families in poverty, not millionaires.
Agreed to the part in bold.
Perhaps they should be interviewing Michigan legislators and ask if they plan on addressing this loophole to put an end to such abuse.
I don't understand why this household would be eligible for Food Stamps.
It's been a long time since I was doing a lot of Food Stamp litigation but I just did a quick check and the regs are the same. Not only is there an income test, there is also a resource test, and this household's liquid and total resources are above the federal resource limit.
I really can't see how they're eligible and the article didn't explain. It could be something as simple as the household continues to be eligible for the month in which the lump sum was received, but in the next month, when they report the lottery proceeds as a resource, they will no longer be eligible.
That's a good point; I was wondering about it myself. Also, what about contributions to retirement accounts? Or if the guy put it in trust for his kids? As trustee, he'd have access to the funds, but it would not be considered his money any more.

Eligibility guidelines are federal; states administer the federal program. Of course, that also makes the states responsible for determining the actual eligibility of applicants, and if they're not doing their jobs properly, that's a problem, too.
Our government is so dysfunctional that it cannot even properly administer food stamps to recipients who are truly in need. Pathetic. And libs wonder why conservatives have a problem with big government and its ineptitude and gross inefficiencies.
Actually, the federal SNAP ("food stamp") program is administered by the states, not the fed. Go biatch them out.
There are lots of people who fraudently collect food stamps... they own their own business but put the business on someone else's name and collect stamps and unemployment... all the while they are earning six figures... they said if the government is stupid enough to give these handouts without checking, that's the government fault... I sure do love liberals... they're geniuses!

With freedom comes responsibility. Sadly, dishonesty doesn't seem to garner much public shame these days. If there were substantial penalties for defrauding the system and if the system were enforced, perhaps abuse wouldn't be as common.
As long as we have a welfare society and teach children from day one that they are "entitled" scenarios like this will keep repeating itself.
I suspect this guy is being investigated from the amount of publicity he has generated. If he is defrauding the system he's no longer flying under the wire.
Once they are in the system..they get rubber stamped each month.
Our programs are rife with corruption..both from the givers and takers.
How did prisoners IN JAIL get those home buyer credit checks mailed to them ?
In jail with no paperwork to show they even bought a home..yet they got approved and got their checks. That's just one glaring example of your government at work.
Hmmm in Florida they don't ask for bank statements but they do ask if you've won any large sums of money in the past 6 months. I don't care how much he was taxed; he shouldn't be receiving food stamps.
Yes, but he wouldn't be ALLOWED to do that if the system didn't permit him to in the first place. Why blame him? He's only exposing a weakness in the system that needs to be exposed and changed. He didn't commit any crime. People waste their time yelling at him, yell at the people that allow him to do what he's doing in the first place.
