We have to expand beyond this planet. Even if we don't destroy it, the population will outgrow it. We simply won't have the natural resources to survive.

By 2050? Possible but not likely. Does anyone know if there's any work being done on an interplanetary space ship at present?

yes check out NASA's VASMIR

YouTube - ‪Vasimir-Motore al plasma‬‏

I belive the Vasimr engine is scheduled to be installed on the International Space Station during or before 2013 for testing in space they alredy have it working here on earth.

YouTube - ‪Nasa shuttle launch Atlantis high definition 1280x720‬‏

just watching us launch a shuttle is still pretty amazing that we can build some pretty amazing things and the earth is one good looking planet I must say but then again that is our home and sure makes you think that we are capable of so much more it just depends are we willing to try
