He probably did it on purpose to distract the after-birthers for a few days, give them something new to plaster all over the internet. If not, it was one of those brain-farts all you young ones have to look forward to when you get about his age. Happens to everyone sooner or later when you have a 100 things going on all at one time.

Heh, that was a dumb mistake. I look forward to this being used to excuse every Republican or right wing official who says something dumb for the next three years, much like "57 states" is used to this day as a deflection almost like a reflexive response to any time anybody on the right says anything dumb.
