I'm surprised this requires explanation. The simple principle of rejecting what would likely be a popular candidate with a decent chance of winning as his views are little different from those of his opponent.

Exactly what part of Ron Paul's philosophy would you categorize as blatantly partisan? Define his lack of "civic intelligence".
The concept of putting your beliefs before victory is not particularly difficult to understand.
