I've always wanted to know this. Is it the profit motive?

GM now sells more cars in China than they do here in the United States.

Chrysler, GM and Ford are all showing profits.

Toyota suffered major recalls in 2009 and 2010 due to unintended acceleration issues. Toyota suffered major losses last year and will fell the impact of tornados.

In most quality surveys American cars are consistently on par with foreign car manufacturers.

So in what way are American car manufacturers not competitive?

Unions!

They want an unskilled worker to push a button to turn a screw on an automatic wrench to be paid 25.00 or more per hour with free retirement and HC benefits.

Their labor costs are higher.

There's a number of "foreign" car plants in non-UAW dominated states.

While the Japanese and Korean manufacturers do have plants in non-union US states, you do realize (I hope) that their cars produced in Japan and Korea are made by union workers. These cars are just as good as the ones their plants in the USA are making, and their cars were rated higher than US manufacturers long before they started production in US factories.*

These unionized Japanese and Korean auto workers also have nationalized health care.

* well, the Japanese ones, at least.

Exactly. Plus, every make and model sold in the US is manufactured by a for-profit company, including many in which you may easily purchase a share of ownership.

US car manufacturers compete successfully every day with foreign auto manufacturers.
However, their way was paved with endless obstacles.
Its a problem of mentality: their management, shareholders and workers all contributed to their problems. One thing people omit to see is that Detroit made huge profits in the years before the crash selling SUV and minivans. Large, inefficient engines, heavy cars. The shareholders expected this trend to continue, with increasing profits. In such atmosphere it was not possible to turn around and invest in fuel efficient smaller and nimble sedans, or invest in quality. You can't see quality and reliability in showrooms where so many are interested in cup holders and back seats for babies. The shareholders were interested in this quarter results and nothing else. Its hard to turn around a heavy boat. Does anyone know how much money Ford made with the ****ty Explorer and Chevy with the Blazer? And how many mini caravans Chrysler sold?
