A person can self-insure, an employer is not a requirement.
Delivery driver for Coke. One needs money to self insure. Do you really believe after being unemployed for three years this delivery man had any money left?

Wrong!!! In order to qualify for Medicaid, you need to be a disabled minor, pregnant female, elderly, or a DISABLED adult. Since he was turned down for disability which would automatically have put him on Medicaid, and since he is not elderly, he doesn't qualify for Medicaid. Assets have nothing to with it if you are not also elderly, pregnant, or disabled. See below.

The shame is on you for comments which have no basis in fact.
This from the Medicaid website:

In general, you should apply for Medicaid if you have limited income and resources. You must match one of the descriptions below. (Even if you are not sure whether you qualify, if you or someone in your family needs health care, you should apply for Medicaid and have a qualified caseworker in your state evaluate your situation.) Pregnant Women
Apply for Medicaid if you think you are pregnant. You may be eligible if you are married or single. If you are on Medicaid when your child is born, both you and your child will be covered. Children and Teenagers
Apply for Medicaid if you are the parent or guardian of a child who is 18 years old or younger and your family's income is limited, or if your child is sick enough to need nursing home care, but could stay home with good quality care at home. If you are a teenager living on your own, the state may allow you to apply for Medicaid on your own behalf or any adult may apply for you. Many states also cover children up to age 21. Person who is Aged, Blind, and/or Disabled
Apply if you are aged (65 years old or older), blind, or disabled and have limited income and resources. Apply if you are terminally ill and want to get hospice services. Apply if you are aged, blind, or disabled; live in a nursing home; and have limited income and resources. Apply if you are aged, blind, or disabled and need nursing home care, but can stay at home with special community care services. Apply if you are eligible for Medicare and have limited income and resources. Other Situations
Apply if you are leaving welfare and need health coverage. Apply if you are a family with children under age 18 and have limited income and resources. (You do not need to be receiving a welfare check.) Apply if you have very high medical bills, which you cannot pay (and you are pregnant, under age 18 or over age 65, blind, or disabled).

In short, he needs to be under age 18 and disabled, a pregnant female, over age 65, blind, or disabled. Single people under 65 with no dependents and not classified as disabled are pretty much left out in the cold on any 'welfare' or entitlement program other than food stamps - and in some states they don't qualify for those, either.
Yes, indeed, shame on America. Our citizens have been abandoned. No other industrialized country in the world is this backward on the fundamental issue of health care.

There is no way this man qualifies for Medicaid - in spite your ignorant belief. This from the Medicaid website:

Thats not at all true.. There are various of other programs he would have qualified for
Hill Burton Hospital free care program, or the HRSA program..
The man was in Georgia, where they also offer state clinics, http://www.needhelppayingbills.com/html/georgia_free_health_care_clini1.html (broken link) for free as well.
The postings supporting this man is just astounding..
Worse case scenario, the man goes to the hospital, gets treated, gets denied federal assistance to pay for treatement, and he gets a negative mark on his credit report..
Current scenario, the man goes to jail, gets a felony mark against him, and he's unable to find a future job..
You guys think he's better going to jail. Ooh wait, no you dont, you think he should be used to symbolize why everyone needs free care, even thought he refused free care...

My post was on the OP's totally erroneous comments on Medicaid, not other possible charity avenues available in GA. Blathering on with totally unfactual remarks as though anyone could qualify for Medicaid - which they can't.
Re GA compassionate charity care, I suggest you talk to ReturningWest on the Unemployment Forum on just how available and generous GA safety nets have been for her. She also was turned down for Medicaid and doesn't live near any charity clinics nor does she have the money for gas to drive to any. The only charity assistance she's been able to get is food stamps. GA is one of the worst states when it comes to safety nets.
There is always an 'answer' isn't there?

Just as much as there will always be someone whining that they are entitled to someone elses stuff or a liberal using someones stupidity, to promote the need to have government take over our lives.
30k a year for his incarceration
$$$ amount of money for his medical needs while incarcerated.
$$$ For his trial
$$$ For his probation
$$$ when he realizes he cant get a job when he gets out and commits another crime.
30k a year for life in prison.
....Thank god we prevented of that "Tax payer burden" of singlepayer though.
