They should have claimed they were Mexicans and that their passports were fakes.
Only in this country where Europeans that overstay are punished and thrown in jail for a "mix-up" while Juanito from Mexico gets off scott-free even though he slammed into and killed a family because he was driving drunk
This is one of the reasons why I advise foreign tourists to avoid the United States for the time being. Our customs officials are often complete idiots, and their errors can land YOU in jail. Why take that kind of risk?
