Supreme Court strikes down California video game law - Yahoo! News (http://beta.news.yahoo.com/supreme-court-strikes-down-california-video-game-law-142839213.html - broken link)

So, it's ok to sell/rent violent video games to minors, but people under the age of 17 aren't allowed to go to an R rated movie without a parent?

I am a gamer myself...there are some games that I play that include the same amount (a lot of times MORE) violence, offensive language, and depictions of sex/drug use as R rated movies.

My question is this...why is it ok for kids to play these games?

It's revolting for ANYone to play these games.

How lovely that this is "entertainment" in American society. (Well, not in my house it isn't.)

I can say more later, but basically the film industry is self-regulating. There is no law on movie ratings. I haven't read the full opinion yet, but I'm picturing that as the key distinction between game and movie ratings.

When I was under 17( 5 1/2 years ago) and trying to buy Grand Theft Auto, I had to at least get an ok from my guardians. But this is only in California. Where I'm at, Gamestop doesn't allow those under 17 to buy mature rated games without the parents/guardian's approval.

Yep. Very true. I got carded when I bought all my Grand theft Autos.

Did you know that it's not actually against the law to rent a rated "R" movie to a kid?

With that in mind, why should there be a law against renting something like Duke Nukem Forever to a kid?

When I was years beyond getting carded at the bars or liquor stores I got carded at Best Buy for a video game. Think it was Doom3

Clerk is like you "You have ID?", I'm like "ID for what?". It was quite amusing.

I guess that must have been Best Buy's policy?

Despite that I'm almost 22, I have a teen look and get carded a lot. I was carded when I bought Black OPs at Gamestop.

Americans are thrilled by violence, but have a whole heap of complexes about nudity and anything sexual.

They should do away with all the laws about this. If a parent wants to allow their child to see this crap, oh, well, it's none of my business. Do I think it's better for society if kids DON'T see graphic violence at a young age? Of course. but a lot of times, kids will do it even if their parents don't give approval (i.e., go to a friend's house). So the law is kind of meaningless, the kids will just get it elsewhere or their parents will just go buy it for them for Christmas.
