Think about it. There’s a significant chance that failing to raise the debt limit could provoke a renewed financial crisis — and Republicans would rather take that chance than allow a reduction in tax breaks on corporate jets.

Nobody has agreed to "large spending cuts"....

And corporate taxes should be zero. They just add to the price of our products and make politicians look good.

So if the Dems raise corporate taxes, have you ever thought who will pay the increased taxes? Do you really think McDonalds, Exxon, GM, etc will just accept lower profits? Wake up! YOU and I will pay those tax increases.

You might want to check with Obama's former chief economic advisor on how tax increases negatively impact the economy.

well, we should use the Sherman Antitrust act, to break the "too big to fail" firms up, and use it to break up the health insurance industry as well.

we should get rid of fannie and freddie, somehow, and privatize the mortgage markets.

we should limit FDIC insured institutions to retail banking.

we should reform healthcare (again), with an emphasis on competition, deregulation, transparency, and tax equity.

we should means test social security and medicare, and we should remove the cap on the SS tax for higher-wage people.

we should reform the tax code to be much, much flatter than it currently is, removing all tax credits or deductions that distort peoples' decision making, and make rates on wages the same as rates on capital gains, or corporate income.

Yeah, I'm not sure where that poster got that ridiculous notion.

The truth is that for every $1 the government taxes out of the economy and spends, $1.10 worth of economic growth is destroyed.

We've been over this before.

Give us two dollars in spending cuts for every dollar of new taxes and it's a deal.

Exactly...The first place to cut is Congress members pay checks and perks!

Then we "Clean Up Congress" and go from there. Here's a thought...stop corruption and spending more than we take in by starting with the ones who create our problems in the first place. Put the blame where it lies and start there:

The 26th amendment (granting the right to vote for 18-year olds) took only 3 months & 8 days to be ratified! Why? Simple! The people demanded it. That was in 1971...before computers, before e-mail, before cell phones, etc.

Of the 27 amendments to the Constitution, seven (7) took 1 year or less to become the law of the land...all because of public pressure.

So let us propose a 28th amendment:

Congressional Reform Act of 2011

1. No Tenure / No Pension.
A Congressman collects a salary while in office and receives no pay when they are out of office.

2. Congress (past, present & future) participates in Social Security.
All funds in the Congressional retirement fund move to the Social Security system immediately. All future funds flow into the Social Security system, and Congress participates with the American people. It may not be used for any other purpose.

3. Congress can purchase their own retirement plan, just as all Americans do.

4. Congress will no longer vote themselves a pay raise. Congressional pay will rise by the lower of CPI or 3%.

5. Congress loses their current health care system and participates in the same health care system as the American people.

6. Congress must equally abide by all laws they impose on the American people.

7. All contracts with past and present Congressmen are void effective 1/1/12. The American people did not make this contract with Congressmen. Congressmen made all these contracts for themselves. Serving in Congress is an honor, not a career. The Founding Fathers envisioned citizen legislators, so ours should serve their term(s), then go home and back to work.
