The war on drugs does exactly what it in intended to do.
It provides hundreds of billions of off the books dollars that are laundered through major banks and provide funding for off the record government operations.
It provides millions of dollars for law enforcement agencies and provides employment for countless numbers of people.
It represses the people and reduces their rights to the level of peasants, while at the same time elevating the status of government and giving them power they are given by the constitution.
It invokes the war powers act, which justifies the suppression of the bill of rights.
You see? It does everything the government intended it to do.
You are 100% correct here.

The "war on drugs" has, in fact, spawned an entire industry and those who benefit from it are not about to relinquish their stranglehold on all that easy money without a sanctimonious fight.

Beneficiaries include law enforcement officers and staff, judiciary and ancillary court personnel, lawyers, private prison builders and managers and the most contemptible of all: the rehab centers.

Ruined lives and huge social cost? So what! As long as all those "law" folk are living comfortably and big pharm has minimal competition all seems to be rosy.

Alcohol is more dangerous than any recreational drug I'm aware of, with the possible exception of meth (which is a direct result of criminalization).

The drug war has destroyed more lives than drug use could ever hope to. It's really only religous types that seem bent on criminalization of everything, fits their program.

I like how the excuse people use is that we already have alcohol and tobacco legal, why do we want to make our country worse by having all drugs legal? So, shouldn't their real argument be that alcohol and tobacco should be illegal? The usual reply is America is use to those two, so it's okay.

Well it makes sense to day that if two things that are legal are worse for you, then why aren't the other things legal.

Anyway, the real argument should be that no one should tell any other adult what they can put into their body.

Reality is, government has no legal or moral authority to dictate what people put into their own bodies.

Do you need a good wise king to make your choices for you?

It is an atrocity. This failed war has wreck havoc on America. However, America has turned into a police and military state. America exceptionalism is now define by have the highest prison population of non-violent criminal and exporting arms.

I think around 60% of our prison population consists of non-violent drug criminals. We spend around $30k a year to harbor prisoners. Not only is the War on Drug is unjust, but it harms economic prosperity. It diverts productive resources towards non-productive ends.
Actually the War on Poverty has been the biggest failure. The more money thrown at welfare programs, the worse the problems get.

A good rule of thumb is:

Anything thing our government decalres war on, is simply a distraction to cover for it's real war on the taxpayer.

Does the government have a legal or moral authority to dictate what poisons you sell to people to ingest? Why bother having an FDA? Just let businesses and individuals market whatever they feel like marketing.

If Mexican cartels can manufacture candy flavored meth to middle school children, then why should we throw money on the FDA at all?

There hasn't been any real War on Drugs. They know full well where the drugs come from, and they've done nothing to close the border to these cartels. The government itself has been running high power weapons to these very same cartels.
