Patriotism is one of the differences, but also speed, language, artistic expression, etc.
Most of the movies I watch are American and unless it's a war film or a film based on a real story (tragedy, 9/11, civil rights movement, etc.), you don't get the sense of "Americans are superior!" "AMERICA! F*** YEAH!"... so I really don't get your point. It seems it's coming more from your prejudice of American culture (though I don't particularly fault you, a lot of people are caught up in the same line of thought).

Same here, the majority of movies I watch are Americans, for the simple reason that Hollywood inundates the world with its movies. English is a simple language, thus translators for the subtitles are cheap, etc. Else we might see more Bollywood or Mollywood movies, too.
But it really is a blessing whenever they air a Portuguese movie, they are usually thoughtful and artistic. Same goes for French or Polish movies.
There are good American movies as well, but the percentage is far lower.
