My closing statement was that what the government wants with tax reform is more tax revenue, pure and simple (presumably to pay for the ever increasing spending). I also said that it is basically pointless to reform taxes until the spending side is adjusted / reformed. My analogy was that focusing on taxes first, at the exclusion of analyzing and reducing spending, is like buying better health insurance to compensate for lousy living / eating habits. Simply not effective in any long term sense.

It still doesn't matter, they are getting higher taxed on their income.

And also, when you say "no taxes on necessities", you add in tax breaks. This is exactly how we got to where we are now, and the tax is useless.

Taxes are better when simpler. Corporations would use the "not on necessities" loophole to get out for buying lunches, Televisions, phones, buildings, electricity, etc.

this is why the fair tax applies to ALL purchases and services. even business pays the tax. the advantage is that there would be NO federal tax with holding from anyones paycheck. the state and local taxes are another thing.

And like I said.

If it applies to ALL purchases, then someone making 50,000 dollars a year is going to pay taxes on all 100% of his/her income. If someone makes 250,000 dollars a year, then they will only pay taxes on 50% of their income if they spend 125,000 a year, and still live quite nice.

Nothing "Fair" about it.

the tax is only paid when someone buys something. if someone is spending all their income on things, then they have a spending problem. but again they would have LARGER paychecks because there would be NO FEDERAL TAX with held.

and the other fun thing is NO FEDERAL TAX RETURN to file. it also is eliminated.

If you buy a apple at the store, taxed.

If you don't have to spend any money to buy enough apples to live, then you pay less in taxes.

Its simple enough.

A flat tax, on everyones income at a specific percentage is the easiest, fairest way to tax.

the flat tax is not the easiest way, nor the fairest either. the easiest way is in fact the fair tax because the people dont have to file a tax return at the end of the year, and neither do businesses. also when someone buys a car, then the tax also applies, so if the poor man buys cheap car, like a fiesta for instance, he is paying the same tax rate that the rich guy buying a mercedes, but the guy buying the merc is paying much more in tax on the car because of the higher price.

You don't have to file a tax return with the flat tax.

You make 1000 dollars. If the flat tax is 25%, then on your next check you get 750 dollars, no refunds, no more taxes, thats it.

yeah, the problem with that is you still pay sales taxes, federal excise taxes, etc. with the fair tax ALL FEDERAL TAXES EVERY ONE OF THEM goes away. no excise taxes, no income taxes, no other federal tax with holding, even the employers dont pay the employees soc sec tax. unemployment taxes at the federal level also go away. that means not only do you get more money in your paycheck, but now your employer can pay you a higher hourly rate because the hidden taxes on your paycheck go away.
