Thanks for the news about the Vietnam Veterans event in DC. Recently, I took a guy to the Wall who had never been to DC(we're only about 3+ hrs away). He lost his Dad during that war and wanted to pay his respects.
The people there were very helpful and instantly found my friends' Dad and had a copy made for him. It was a real emotional experience for me, although I never fought there. I will always remember that day. I remember when that memorial was designed and there was so much controversy about its simple design. I think it has become the most powerful memorial in Washington, plus its within view of the Lincoln Memorial. I think it sums up what a visit to Washington should be about. The Vietnam era vets are Americas best!!
When I visited the wall, I walked over from Crystal City. It was the longest walk in my life. I could see the wall but had to stop and set on a bench for a bit. Then I started out again, only to have to set on another bench. Each bench was a time for reflection. I finally got to the wall and was able to see many friends there. No, not in person. But by name. Just rubbing my hand across their engraved names meant a lot to me.

Yes, it is a very powerful experience. I was living in DC during the debate about building it, and it received a lot of criticism while under design. I think it came out very well, and has served a valuable purpose.

It's an extremely emotional place. But I love visiting it. Each time, I have different emotions. I was last there, this Memorial Day weekend/ Rolling Thunder.
My first time there was just like your first. I kept on stopping before I looked into the book to find my buddies' names.
