I took a look at unemployment data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics - Last 4 Junes (2008 - 2011). June 2011 is the last month for which data is available. I wanted to see how groups that voted for Obama in 2008 were faring under Obama, unemployment-wise figuring any big change might mean a big change on Election Day 2012. After the overall unemployment rate, the first set is by education level attained 25 and older and the second set is by race 16 and older. 2008 was George Bush's last year in office.

OVERALL UNEMPLOYMENT

June 2008 5.6
June 2009 9.5
June 2010 9.5
June 2011 9.2

EDUCATION LEVEL (age 25 and over)

Less than a high school diploma unemployment rate:

June 2008 8.8
June 2009 15.6
June 2010 14.1
June 2011 14.3

High School Graduate

June 2008 5.2
June 2009 9.8
June 2010 10.7
June 2011 10.0

Some college and/or an Associate's Degree

June 2008 4.3
June 2009 8.1
June 2010 8.3
June 2011 8.4

College Graduate

June 2008 2.4
June 2009 4.8
June 2010 4.4
June 2011 4.4

RACE (16 years old and older)

White

June 2008 5.0
June 2009 8.7
June 2010 8.6
June 2011 8.1

Black

June 2008 9.6
June 2009 14.9
June 2010 15.4
June 2011 16.2

Hispanic

June 2008 7.7
June 2009 12.2
June 2010 12.4
June 2011 11.6

Asian (note: for some reason "Asian" is not seasonably adjusted like all of the other categories)

June 2008 4.5
June 2009 8.2
June 2010 7.7
June 2011 6.8

If anyone doesn't think education matters...this tells me college gaduates are saying, "What unemployment problem?" and probably "jobs" won't be their Number 1 issue when they vote on Election Day and maybe the debt or entitlements or war or social issues are more problematic issues for them.

But Obama has to be wondering about that big voting bloc of blacks that voted for him in 2008. You can't tell me with those year to year trending unemployment numbers that jobs isn't the Number 1 issue for them. I don't think he should take their vote for granted in 2012.

The maps for the unemployment rates by states only go to May, not June. I wanted to see how the Swing States were faring.

I wonder when one of THEM will be in to dispute your numbers. THEY have to deflect all they can to keep truths like this from being seen. If employment means anything to the Obama voters it looks like they may have to seriously look at what has happened to them.

Do you honestly think the people that tend to vote democrat are going to go Republican if they think they'll lose their entitlements? Obama is shoring up the base. When the next election comes around they'll vote for the party with the compassionate image who tells them he'll take care of them. Recent history is of no consequence to this group.

I am a federal employee with a doctorate. I've been employed the whole time. I have volunteered for pay freezes and "voila" was granted one, and I have asked to have my taxes raised. I shop, pay my mortgage, pay taxes, give to charity, everything a working stiff should do. I am keenly aware of what is going on for the less fortunate, and I would like to help, but somehow axing my job (ain't gonna happen) is the only solution I hear on these boards.

You do not want a bunch of college educated and experienced people hitting the streets. It is not going to help the high school dropouts.

I hope you're not celebrating the misfortune of the millions without job and trying to use it for political gains. Having said that, what has unemployment rate during Bush's last year in office got to do with all this? After all, you could apply the same logic to Carter's last year in office and blame Reagan for "keeping" a high unemployment rate of over 9.5% for two years. Does it make sense to even make an argument out of it?

Unemployment issue (losses and recovery) trails recessions by several months. About 8.8 million private sector jobs were lost over two years, beginning Jan 2008 (4.7 million in first twelve months and 4.1 million in the next). Consequently, that doubled the number of people unemployed, with the gap between civilian labor force and employed growing from 7.6 million (Dec 2007) to 15.2 million (Dec 2009).

I hope college graduates, and others, are smart enough to recognize that this ain't because of the President, but the writing was on the wall for a long long time, and will be around for a long long time, no matter who is in office (save for another quickie of an economic bubble like we experienced in 2005-2007).

Unemployment will be the biggest issue for Blacks but judging by what I hear on talk radio most Blacks hold Bush responsible and are firmly behind Obama. At worst Obama may see a drop in turnout among Blacks which would be problematic in some states like Virginia and North Carolina. However the drop would be off of record levels and expected.

1- What is taxpaying base?
2- How is Obama destroying it?

Remind me again which group held unemployment benefits hostage to that they could ensure the rich retained their tax cuts?
Remind me again which group says over and over it is your problem if you hit hard times and they do not want to help especially if costs them a couple of bucks?
Remind me which group has whined and whined about the unemployment rate, but has yet to provide any rational and new ideas on how the Govenment is supposed to resolve the issue, as if it was they job to do so?
Unemployment is still high, and if the government had not done what they did it would be even higher. We dug ourselves, meaning US the American People, into a deep hole and it will take time to get out. I know some will continue to whine on and on but the reality is if you have no solutions you are just a whiner. Have a Great Day
