.4% of temperature stations saw a record between the 17th and the 23rd.
Of course, when they add in the stupid "heat index", the hyperventilating gets even worse. This is just another example of the ridiculous sensationalism of the media, with the underlying meme of "global warming" of course.
However, the NOAA database of all-time Max Temperature for the entire US from over 6000 weather stations shows that there were no records broken on July 17, July 18, July 19, or July 20th. A total of 4 stations broke records on July 21, 20 on July 22, and 10 on July 23, 2011, for a grand total of less than 0.4% of stations breaking a temperature record sometime during the past week.
Ahh, yes. They are at it again. The media hyperventilating about a heat wave that really wasn't.
It's summer people. Summer in the Northeast can be brutal....have we forgotten that?
Seems this one might have been worse. Though it pales in comparison to the European heat wave a few years ago (which appeared to be not nearly as bad as the U.S. heat wave, but that didn't stop 40,000 of them from dying).

The point is; the media truly are a bunch of lemmings, just repeating one after another, the meme of the day, like the "record breaking heat wave" narrative.

As soon as you understand why it was a big problem in Europe, we'll talk.
Until then, sometimes not making comments about something you don't understand is the more prudent approach.
I'll give you a hint: we use summer weight down comforters in Europe.
I slept under my winter weight comforter last night.

One can only suppose the people that died in the "nonexistent" heat wave would beg to disagree.

Good find, sanrene. I remember a report put out by NASA and the media was hyperventilating over that it was the warmest year on record, on average. If you carefully read NASA's report, it shows that AT MOST (believe it was 2010) that 2010 was warmer than 2009 by 0.1°C or less
This heatwave may not be "record breaking" but 99 degrees at 10:30pm is not exactly a mild summer evening either.
it is in tucson and phx arizona. but then out here during the day coyotes and jackrabbits will share a bottle of water in the shade.

it happens here more often than you might think.
