Actually, local used book stores have been picking up the slack.

I blame the idiotbox that's been dumbing down the masses for decades. Easier to just push on and sit back and let the TV do all the thinking and imagining for you

They don't call it TV "programming" for nothing.

I blame the Nook, the Kindle, name your device, and online shopping. Next casualty of reading technology: Libraries. Too many have closed already.

Libraries and papermills closing, bookstore employees, printers, distributors...all out of work...

Sorry, it's a pet peeve of mine.

If only we could bring back the quill. Then, we could achieve full employment.

Easy money doesn't rationalize bad decision making.

And they could have just as easily took the money and build up their web presence instead of their brick and mortar operations.

Borders tried to compete with Barnes and Noble, and failed. Then they tried to make their stores into super-sized Starbucks and they failed. They tried to compete with other on-line retailers and they had nothing compelling to separate them from the competition.

In essence Border's become a business with no compelling reason to exist. There was nothing that they offered that their competitors didn't have.

Businesses are constantly getting outsmarted and outflanked by new competitors. Blockbuster ruled video and DVD sales and Netflix drove them into extinction.

Pretty soon the only country you'd be able to find traditional brick-and-mortar stores would be the UK. Well...HMV stores are closing left and right and HMV.co.uk is picking up but, yeah

There's one near me that I go to when I need to buy a book/dvd. Sad to see it go.
