We need a balanced budget so government does not spend more then they take in. We are running at about 24% of GDP, that's 24 cents out of every dollar earned that goes to the federal government. What about tax revenue for the state and local governments?

The left seems to think we no longer have state governments, that all matters of concern are solved by federal government, and all taxes go to the federal government.

The federal government cannot just keep growing until it swallows 30% or more of GDP, we need to put the breaks on. either that, or we become bankrupt like Greece or or a socialist nation like Cuba.
As the most flamingly proud liberal here at CD

I can tell you I would happily support a balanced budget amendment as long as it wasn't rigged to discriminate against tax increases over budget cuts.

I have no problem with budget balancing. If fact the first political PAC I ever joined was a bipartisan group devoted to balancing the budget.

I was one of those who got out of the military and became a defense contractor. It worked out well, until the two wars started. The military had to grow and defense contracting & government grew even more. All of this during a time when the economy was starting to slow down. I've been trying to get out of defense contracting for years now, but civilian companies don't seem to be too interested in us as our experience commands a larger paycheck.

Why isn't this the narrative from the media that Americans want a balanced budget? Even their polls are telling them the truth.

The republicans have passed a budget bill to the senate that has this balanced budget amendment, and yet, a half-baked outline of an idea, by the gang of six in the senate is getting all the media attention.

Only the republican bil that was sent to the senate can be passed before the August deadline, and 0bama has stubbornly stated he will not sign a temporary increase to the debt ceiling.

Asked whether or not he would veto legislation temporarily increasing the debt ceiling, the president said: "I will not sign a 30-day, or 60-day, or 90-day extension. It's irresponsible. They know better," Obama said.

We want a balanced budget amendment, because congress has proven incapable of controlling their spending urges.

CNN just released a poll of 1,000 Americans showing overwhelming support for the House Republican approach to the debt limit crisis. Specifically, 66 percent of Americans favor a deal where both houses of Congresses pass a balance budget amendment, and substantial cuts and caps on future spending, in exchange for a debt limit hike.[

Question 25:
Would you favor or oppose a constitutional amendment to require a balanced federal budget?

Favor 74%
Oppose 24%

Question 25A:
In order to get the federal budget deficit under control, do you think it is necessary or not necessary to pass a Constitutional amendment requiring a balanced federal budget?

Necessary 60%
Not necessary 38%
As usual the populace are miles ahead of the morons in DC. After all, the populace has to live within their means and balance their budgets, again unlike the morons in DC.

I expect them to react the same way they always do. If demand clarity indicates the need to produce more, they will produce more. If that require hiring, they will hire. There is nothing new about that except, production technologies have reduced the need for people somewhat.

All a balanced budget amendment says is that the congress has to run a country on a budget that uses 18% of GDP, they cannot just keep growing the size of government by adding endless expenditures that run up a debt.

If anything, its finally an incentive for congress to write legislation to promote greater prosperity and higher GDP. If they want to spend more, find ways to help grow our economy, instead of simply borrowing it, and handing off their debt to the next generation to worry about.

I do believe that the Tea Party, which has co-opted the republican party, wants to block any effort by both parties to raise the debt ceiling. Their plan is to force President Obama to raise the debt limit by executive order thereby creating a constitutional crisis. This will occupy the political arena 100% until the election and give them reason to overthrow the current administration in the form of a coup.
