Vince Cable has attacked leading US Republican politicians for holding up a deal to reduce US government debt.

Speaking on the BBC's Andrew Marr Show, the business secretary called them "a few right-wing nutters in the American Congress".

The sad thing is that, although Vince Cable has genuine credibility, the neanderthal sector of the GOP is if anything going to feel strengthened not chastened by his remarks. They thrive on being attacked by a non-American. Or even by an American from places in the US they regard as un-American like California or NYC. That makes them feel stronger.
