I always liked to watch Archie and Edith so much that I get in at least 3 shows of theirs these days on TV Land. I really get a kick out of their theme song, especially the part where they say "Those were the days. Girls were girls and men were men". Just think this was made up in the early 70s and I can't believe that gays haven't tried to get them off the air these days.

You do understand that his character was a punch line don't you? An underdeveloped, impatient and bigoted man...

Archie was too honest, like most back then in simple times.

He told it like he saw it and didn't care what you thought.

Archie and the Jeffersons was a riot. Many laughs.
Sanford & Sons, too!
MASH

Yeah, I hear ya. I also liked the Jefferson's theme song, "Movin on up,
To the east side.
We finally got a piece of the pie."

The whole point of "All in the Family" was to mock people with attitudes like Archie Bunker's (although it did depict him as complex and human). I watched it as a kid, with my family, in the '70s during its original run. It and some other shows of the time were social commentary of a liberal nature. Its topics included racism, homosexuality, rape, the Vietnam war, and other things the typical sitcom wouldn't touch. Hooray for Norman Lear. Great show.

I think the line "girls were girls and men were men" referred to hippies and the counterculture that America experienced in the 1960s/1970s, which would have been upsetting and world-turned-upside-down to a conservative person like Archie.

You do realize the show was satire aimed at ridiculing people like Archie Bunker?

I was thinking the same thing. Archie was a caricature, some would say the predecessor to Homer Simpson. A clueless lovable idiot.

Even though some called Archie an idiot, there was something about that idiot. He was honest to the point of falult. Not in your face and brash, and mean and evil. Very honest, you knew what he was thinking. Those were the good old days were they not. Loved all the shows from that year, others mentioned too.

Seems since then times have gotten so complex, and different. Too many are brutally honest but not in the way of good old Archie?
