I'd like to add that REAL liberals are also supposed to be for freedom of speech, and freedom from government in general. You know, classic liberalism, not the Progressive claptrap we see today. John Locke is shooting himself in the head in his grave
The German liberal party for instance is still more or less about those real liberal ideas. Its long-time leader and former German vice-chancellor was openly gay. That is unthinkable for a conservative party. And his successor in both offices is of Korean ancestry.
Why is this even a left/right issue? Some people will take a partisan stance on anything. I read that the girl has the highest GPA and it was that simple for me.
It really isn't but that's how the OP presented the thread.
That's EXACTLY what's it's designed to do. The biggest threat to a racist is an intelligent hardworking, confident, ambitious person of color. There is NOTHING they hate more. You will see this in the corporate world, the political arena and in school. A parent needs to teach their children these injustices exist and then prepare their children emotionally, mentally and spiritually to deal with this. I'm very grateful I had parents and other individuals in life that prepared me for dealing with bigotry and racism.
Oh, wise race relations expert.
Raise your children to expect racism, that's part of the problem. Teach them that everyone is equal and they can figure the rest out for themselves and identify injustices where they truly are instead of expecting it at every turn, even when that's not even the case.
If anything.. this girl could be a role model to other prego teens. Not to give up on their dreams. Even if you have a kid it is still possible to finish school at the top of your class. The girl deserves the award, she earned it.
According to the story in that link she deserves the award but I haven't seen any proof that that story is the story other than the story of the plaintiff in a law suit. Do all plaintiffs win?

Happens all the time in college admissions and medical school for white and black people. The black person gets in despite a lower GPA than the white person with higher GPA. That's not fair, is it? Perhaps the principal was making a point of affirmative action. And no I'm not speaking for anyone, but I'm just speculating
Maybe we should speculate on lower qualified whites that get in based on legacy admissions or parents who happen to be generous donors, or friends of friends.
That's not fair, is it?...how many decades has this been the status quo, a hundred years?? Maybe we should look more closely at white privilege, I'm not speaking for everyone, just speculating.
Here we are, seven pages and seventy comments into it. I've seen lots of very familiar conservative posters quibbling about the details, quibbling about whether this is typical of what happens in the south, scrambling to come up with alternative explanations for why the principal might have done this.
I haven't seen a single post from a conservative even suggesting that if this girl were denied this honor because of her race there might have been something wrong with that.
That tells me a lot.
There is scant proof that's the case. I need more than one sided facts before I pile on with righteous indicnation. It very well be the case that she was discriminated against because of her race but I didn't conclude that from the article I read.
I saw in the article that she was a "young mother" or something to that effect and that got me thinking. Something else that got me thinking is that the mother is the media specialist. Does anyone not see how either of these things could create a "big mess" at the school?
Also, we don't know if she finished all her credits in time, we don't know if she was a year behind and thus was not graduating with her original class, we don't know anything about it other than the journalist's view (and the view of the girl and her mother) claiming racism.
Ah SoooooooO!!!!!!!
A Valedictorian is a role model. Other students are taught to EMULATE the achievement of this person.
Young mother? Baby out of wedlock? I'd say that disqualifies her big time. Regardless of her race.
I figured there was more to this than we were getting on first blush.
