What, exactly, did Obama DO that caused demand for aircraft to fall?

Is their business model so flimsy, that a few offhand comments by the president causes double-digit decrease in demand? Am I supposed to believe that's Obama's fault, rather than a consequence of the global recession?

They are arguing how they are "job creators", and such, but it sounds to me like demand for their product depends on having favorable tax breaks, re: the deprecation schedule of aircraft, which basically means the taxpayer is helping to pay for all these jobs.

well when the president goes after businesses and starts talking about raising their taxes in very clear and understandable ways, businesses respond by limiting their exposure.

in this case Bammer has stated clearly that he wants to stop companies from using airplanes as write-offs.

Businesses respond. They don’t buy new planes.

ergo....

there is nothing "offhanded" about Bammers comments.

They need customers to run their business.

One more thing - these jets are great multipliers of the economy. In other words, there are numerous systems and sub-systems, and sub-assemblies, and programming, and engineering consultants needed to assemble the final product. So Obama's comments hurt more than just the company that puts together the final product.
If a corporation or wealthy individual honestly has the need or desire and money to buy a corporate jet they will buy one, tax breaks or not.

If they need a tax break as an "incentive" to buy a corporate jet then one has to question just how compelling the need or desire is on their part to make the purchase.

Bootstraps, baby, bootstraps. Get off the govt dole.
Irony here the same people complaining about ending subsidies and write offs for are also the one complaining about too much government interference.

The manufacturers of corporate jets are just "Talking Their Book" to protect their own interest. I don't blame them but I don't take their rhetoric seriously either. If they survived the downturn from 2008 to 2010 they will survive this.

Jet industry furious at Obama

In response to Obama’s press conference, the General Aviation Manufacturers Association (GAMA) and International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) issued a letter to the president. The two organizations challenged the administration’s rhetoric and recalled a similar instance in which 20,000 IAM workers were laid off as a result of “ill-informed criticism of corporate jets and business aviation” and the 2008 downturn.

“Words have consequences and, in this industry, a few misguided words can put at risk even the ever-so-modest recovery we have experienced,” said IAM International President Tom Buffenbarger. “What this industry and its workforce requires is more time to recover, a chance to book more orders and the opportunity to recall more workers.”

Durable goods orders fall 2.1 percent in June

Demand for commercial aircraft plunged 28.9 percent while orders for new cars and auto parts fell 1.4 percent.
Maybe they need to try to compete by offering superior planes. Those AirBus planes made in the European socialist hellholes are selling in the dozens and no one is buying US jets. And all they can do is blame it on the politicians???

Ever consider we might have far better commercial aviation if the corporate Princes had to travel on the same aircraft as the rest of us self loading cargo. There would be changes.
With all that communist garbage in your post you must be posting from a place like North Korea.
There are no private jets there, right? Is your commercial aviation booming?

Which advisors or counselors are feeding Obama this class-warfare stuff? Or is he sitting around, thinking to himself, "We've got to get rid of those corporate and private jets!" while he's flying around in one of the biggest corp. jets out there. Really. Who tells him to make Vegas a target, or that ATM's and weather have caused job shortages? That's who we need to get to; the people who have not only his ear, but his mouth!

Understood - but you have to take into account (along w/ the economy being down) that the bully pulpit of the president and his rhetoric is keeping some away who could purchase a jet. Look - he is singling out their branch of industry and saying - "hey, don't buy this". It will have some effect.

I believe the OP's point was pointing strictly at the tax breaks - which I thought was crazy.

what do you mean the world most sold jet in history is the boeing 737 and I say go to Everett in westren washington state and take the boeing tour they make the 747, 767, 777, 787's and you get to go through largest building in the world that covers 98.3 acres and you will feel tiny when they take you up top to view the production line heck the entrace tunnel is massive also.
