Oh let me go out there on the limb, since people are floating the stupid idea that Obama can whip out his little pocket guide to the constitution and invoke the 14th amendment, and other non-sense.
I say that if we default, our bonds get downgraded and we can not pay our military budget we take all those on both sides of the isle that voted against this mess (mainly tea party members) and invoke Art. 3 Section 3. "Treason against the United States, shall consist only in levying War against them, or in adhering to their Enemies, giving them Aid and Comfort. No Person shall be convicted of Treason unless on the Testimony of two Witnesses to the same overt Act, or on Confession in open Court. The Congress shall have Power to declare the Punishment of Treason, but no attainer of Treason shall work Corruption of Blood, or Forfeiture except during the Life of the Person attainted."
By failing to pay our military and thus taking away their ability to fight, those Tea Party members have given aid to our enemies we are engaged against in Iraq and Afghanistan. They will no longer be able to serve public office.
The Supreme Court already has declared in 1947 that "two witnesses are not required to prove intent; nor are two witnesses required to prove that an overt act is treasonable"
I think its more plausable then this stupid 14th amendment idea.

On the main topic, legislators can do stupid things without it being treason, which is defined in the Constitution as levying War against the United States.
We do have a remedy for stupid Congresspersons, it's called elections. These tea baggers, were elected because constituents were angry about the economy and were falsely told that Obama was going to institute death panels. Now those same constituents should see what not paying attention does and will have an opportunity to vote against them in 16 months.
On Rober J's denial about default, government revenues are about $200B per month and expenditures are $300B per month. These are the same people who rail against the large deficit, which is contradictory. The government can't have all the money it needs to meet expenditures while also having a deficit.
