Among other things. As McConnell has made perfectly clear - their main stated goal is defeat the President. And to do that they maintain that they must practice scorched Earth politics - they must harm the economy in order to improve their own political chances next year.

Every intelligent economist will tell that cutting spending during a weak economic period is not the direction to go, but the GOP keeps pushing it now.

Of course they would - after all they have a goal and it's not to legislate in the interests of the American people.

Nevermind that a short term deal of Boehner has been discredited by the CBO and also puts our credit at risk, as well maintains stress on investments etc.

Nah, who cares, they have a goal.

Nevermind that the President has bent over backwards and that every plan that has been discussed is essentially a GOP victory.

Nope, it's GOP scorched Earth politics, period.

What does a "GOP budget" have anything to do with this? How is a "GOP budget" relevant to this other than that's what mostly created this mess.

Joe, help me out on this "bend over backwards" thing. How is it that most of the players seemed to like the Gang of Six outline, but the president could not and can not shut up about "corporate jet owners?" The Gang of Six outline, based on the bipartisan Simpson Bowles Commission work, was a common-sense, middle-ground framework that called for a LOT more revenue via pro-growth tax reform.

The way it looks to me, the inflexible one was Obama. He proves it by talking about "corporate jet owners" as if they should be denied the same tax treatment as every other taxpayer. The Gang of Six outline was not about corporate jet owners or higher marginal tax rates; in fact, it championed something quite different.

Obama has used this whole process to inflame the ignorant and excite his base. Boehner was willing to jettison the Tea Party for a Grand Bargain based on the Gang of Six outline; but Obama could not or would not cross his own party's fringe elements. The fact that he was still talking about corporate jet owners one week before the drop-dead date tells you I am right about this.
