Sure, there is money, but...but...but...how would the oil companies survive without their government subsidies?? Here's a thought, how about we take that $4 billion in tax breaks we give to the oil companies--who are making record profits and don't NEED it--and make that available for Pell grants instead? But no, the tea party says we can't touch the oil companies, and we aren't allowed to ask the top 1% to "share the pain" either. It must be wholly borne by the middle and lower classes.
oh boy, another liberal who has no idea of how business works. first off the oil companies DO NOT get money from the federal, or any other government, unless they are buying products from the oil companies. the so called tax breaks are actually depletion allowances, and are done just like depreciation expenses on capital items. these allowances are done so that it encourages business go replace their equipment, or find new oil sources, on a regular basis. and if these allowances were not allowed, then the costs for EVERYTHING you buy today would be a lot more than they are now.

The sad truth is that in 20 years, if the GOP gets exactly what they want, we will have an uneducated population unable to compete in the world. This is their hope for America.
really? for many years the liberals/progressives have been in charge of the department of education in this country, and all that has happened is the dumbing down of america through garbage social education programs. what we need is to eliminate the garbage programs, and get back to teaching real science, math, english, etc. until we do that, the young skulls full of mush that start in first grade will not be properly educated, and america will become a third world country.
As much as you're claiming it is happening. It's certainly not happening on any large scale.
Well, at every school I attended either as a student or a transient student to pick up classes not offered at my home university, that was the norm. University of Florida has over 50,000 students. University of Central Florida also has over 50,000. That's not large scale? Yeahhhhhh. Both community colleges had this going on. The tech school, much less so.
IMHO Education to the Masters Level, and some PHD, should be paid for, including room and books, by the government at government rates at all colleges. PRIVATE colleges like the Ivy League should be eliminated because they only perpetuate a ruling class. THE STUDENTS WOULD GRADUATE DEBT FREE and be available for employment in the private sector or the government if no other suitable jobs were available.

How does one executive being paid the same amount as 180,000 average Americans do that. Every penny that they do not pay falls on the rest of us, with interest
If the government defaults, many students would have to leave school because the government would stop giving loans and grants. Do Republicans care?
Of course they care, are you being obtuse? We are getting to the point where only the wealthy and the poor can attend college, with the middle class being shut out. Middle class kids are drowning in debt, they may never be able to pay back, because tuition and book rates keep going up at a ridiculous clip.
We are going to bankrupt the nation, because folks like you think the federal government aught to be paying for every conceivable act of charity and benevolence.
Why not hold the colleges and universities accountable for increasing tuition rates, which far outstrip inflation and the standard of living? All we seem to do with these grants and taxpayer funded give-aways, is give colleges an excuse to drive up tuition costs, again, and again, and again.
The point is that we are watching our federal government spend us into debt, because they have taken it upon themselves to spend taxpayer money on vote and influence buying schemes, and funding their own personal pet projects, while the taxpayers and our grandchildren are forced to pay for it all... with no chance of stopping them in sight.
Baloney. Student Loans will always be availble to those that qualify. "Grants" should be abolished. No free college for anyone. Get a job deadbeat. My wife attends school AND works a full-time job at the same time.
Oh yeah, school or community college or a real 4 year college? There's a big difference. Good luck holding down a full time job if she's doing a technical field or needs the grades to get into graduate school. The country has an interest in people being educated. I guess maybe you didn't avail of that and thus don't realize why the country needs educated people.

Really? So for 8 years under the Bush administration it was rub by liberals? Huh, you know this country tilts to right on average don't you? It's odd that liberals are dumbing things down when other more liberal countries have higher rates of people with college education. The more conservative United States would come to standstill if it weren't for smart foreign students coming into the country to attend US colleges and staying. Not that liberalism is better, but if you're going to make a statement like the above, you should use brain and actually back up what you're saying.

I agree. My eldest went directly to a State University away from home but my youngest is living home and going to CC first. It's the best thing for students who aren't quite sure what they want to do yet and also good for those with a specific transfer goal. It's often easier to get into the more prestigious State Universities as a junior transfer than it is as an incoming freshman.
I like how people say work their way through. Funny, I didn't know the US is flush with jobs waiting for people to fill them.
It's not. So to expect people who are struggling to pay their own bills to fund someone else's education is wrong.
