An interesting point was made among some in another debt ceiling forum. Made me think about the possibility that if Medicare funds are cut, would it come down to the government forcing doctors to accept Medicare patients as a condition to getting licensed?

I don't know whether they will or not, but I hope so with regard to Medicare and Medicaid.

A doctor has a license to practice medicine because it is in the public interest. That license gives the doctor the opportunity to make mind-boggling incomes. I see no reason why, as a condition of having an exclusive license to make the money a doctor makes in the united States a doctor shouldn't be expected to accept patients whose health coverage is from Medicare or Medicaid.

For the greater good of the Motherland, the comrade Doktors will accept the central committee's payments, even if much lower than normal.

Can we force the middle class to work for free in the public interest? It would make everything cheaper... I think it is ironic when people ask, can we force people to work for the government for free? What next, soldiers?

Lawyers have as a professional expectation that we will provide legal services on a pro bono publico basis.

I've never had a client pay me for my services.

Pro bono is given, not forced upon...

As much of Medical Education is subsidized of course the Physicians will take government rates. Ideally they would all be government employees working in government hospitals and clinics. This would eliminate all the excessive costs created by private insurance and facility executive salaries and profits. That would reduce the medical costs in this country to affordable levels.
