I say "Defense and Homeland Security" because those are things that have to be managed from a centralized standpoint, a.k.a. "The Government." I don't think the people could organize a nuclear weapon defense system or something major like that on our own. The sad thing about choosing that option is that military spending is our largest expense and the Pentagon gets so much money. Military spending is a huge expense right now. I didn't choose education because there is more chance that people could work together to make that more of our own responsibility. The same for the others.
Answering this question makes me think about how we as people should take the initiative to manage more of these things on our own and work together to do such.
I chose healthcare as nothing has been more devastating than mass disease. You can have all the weapons in the world, but if everyone is infected and dying with no one to treat them, they are worthless.
That doesn't necessarily relate to healthcare however. That could be something like the Center of Disease Control. That would be a national epidemic which is really rare. So, should regular and massive funding go towards "healthcare" or is your example more of a national disaster issue?
I'm assuming the OP poll is asking to a doomsdays scenario where only one would be funded. Big healthcare gets massive amounts of funding from the government, without government funding the healthcare industry would collapse, and widespead disease would likely to spread.
It would likely be a black plague type scenario where only the very wealthy could afford healthcare and the rest of the people would helpless, leading to a mass epidemic.
"Big" heathcare, lol. That made me laugh. My doctor works at the Med Care on Oleander Drive in Wilmington, NC. I think they have a staff of four. It's amazing. I can go in there and get heathcare and I pay them some money for their services. As hard as it is to believe, it all functions quite well with absolutely no government involvement. Astonishing eh?
Now when Iran decides to nuke you and your fully funded government heathcare plan what are you going to use to defend yourself?
Government is the ONLY way for people to get healthcare? Wow, I must be one really unhealthy person then.
Exactly, that's my thought process here. I think that it is good for the government to have a reserve system and approach to helping people who have no other choice but to receive government help. But, healthcare by the government, no thanks.

Unfortunately you will never, ever get liberals to exercise any form of personal responsibility. They have no idea what that is.
Won't be a future without a defense system. The other countries wouldn't be as nice as you might think they would be. I'm definitely not a fan of ALL of the defense spending, but I know that it isn't an option to not have at least some funding.
Defense and Homeland Security because it's the one thing in your list that needs to be done at national level that really can't be accomplished by individuals. Education would certainly follow defense.
I voted Defense and Homeland Security, although just plain "Defense" is more in line with my thinking. You have to have national defense before and above all those others. This does not mean, however, that defense must be disproportionately large, and I don't believe in force projection or strategic operations around the globe as part of "the national interest" if it's not directly related to defense of the homeland.
