It is a mixed bag. While the basic aspect of SS is as you say, it has been abused and many are drawing from it who have only achieved the minimum requirement to actually qualify for disability. In some cases, various loopholes have even allowed a family to receive disability for a child that was brought over and born in the US while they were illegal (this I have personally witnessed several times).

So SS needs to go, but... after paying back those who paid in, what they paid in (and in my opinion with interest). As we can see with this abuse and mismanagement by the government, they are not qualified nor trustworthy enough to be in charge of such and the individual should be responsible for their own money. Creating a pool of money to which the government "keeps for our own benefit" is a simply a means to create avenues for government abuse.

So while I agree that the basic function and intent of SS is not an entitlement, it has become one for the many people who abuse it and burden its system. This needs to stop just as all the other entitlements do.

really? you think this country has the best business environment? so then why are the investment dollars going to china and india and brazil? the US economy is not growing, china, india and brazil are. the reaosn for that is their business environment is more friendly to business than ours is. and again it isnt just about taxes, but regulations as well.

Because workers costs in China and India are dirt cheap. It's not like these businesses have to be concerned with how foreign workers support themselves.

Here's some rich people and their salaries as reported by yahoo news yesterday.
Matt Lauer $17 million a year
Brian Williams $13 million a year
Diane Sawyer $12 million a year
Anderson Cooper $11 million a year
Bill Oreilly $10 million a year
Keith Olberman $10 million a year [less than 200,000 viewers on the Algore channel]
What tax rate should they be paying for reading a teleprompter?
Half of all 1040 filers pay ZERO tax [and some get a check]

a. This will increase the spending power of the entire U.S. demand base. Demand drives your economy, not supply.
b. Increased demand, increase in supply, increase in jobs to fill new demand.
3. Invest in welfare education programs. Get people into vocational programs, certification programs, etc, to get them back to work. Unemployment doesn't pay for your house, car, food, and an education.
4. Increase redistributive stimulus programs to increase spending power of individuals.
5. Increase tariffs on imported goods.
6. Continue until economy recovers. When supply outpaces demand, cut spending.
Problem is, #6 will never happen because #1 - #5 destroy the economy. It's been proven over and over that increased government spending does not help the economy. FDR tried it for 10 years ... and it failed.

Taxes received from the upper 2% could go directly to rebuilding roads, etc. pretty simply. Much needed work and much needed livable wage jobs.

After the unions get their hands in the mix, there won't be enough tax money that was collected to pay all the bloated salaries and hefty benefits and pensions.
