Texas Gov. Rick Perry this week signed a state budget bill that requires sales tax collection by Amazon.com Inc. and any other online retailers with in-state subsidiaries that support retail operations, such as distribution centers.
The bill signed this week, SB 1, covered a broad range of fiscal matters and included the same provisions that Perry, a Republican, rejected in May.
Will we see outrage from the same people who lambasted California a few weeks ago for doing the same thing? Rick Perry said he was against it in May. Looks like he's changed his mind.

Bully? You do realize it's not Amazon that will be paying the taxes, but you, the customer.
Yes, I realize that entirely, but that's not the issue. The issue is that Amazon's business model is based on tax evasion. They have a physical presence in California because their Kindle product is manufactured there, and they have a distribution center in Texas, so in both cases, they are required to collect sales taxes, but are refusing to do so.
Another problem is that they are making it more difficult for local businesses to stay in business. If Amazon ends up winning this battle, I would like to see Texas and California eliminate their sales taxes entirely so that local businesses can at least compete with Amazon. The states can then raise their income and/or property taxes to make up the difference.

What outrage? Every state has the right to tax businesses within that state. If any business in a given states makes a sale to someone within that state, then they are obligate to collect and pay any required state tax. However, if that same business were to make a sale to someone outside of that state, then there is no state sales tax applied. The method of how the product or service was ordered is immaterial.
It is no different than ordering anything via mail. If you live in the same state as the business, you pay the state sales tax. If you do not live in the same state, then you do not have to pay any state tax.
