I think it was a move by Perry to reach out to those Christians who need that contact to say something like, 'Hey, you might not like everything you're going to hear over the next year or so but we share Christian values. So, cut me some slack.'
Sort of like The Obama's Hopey Changey shtickey thingey stuff.
If you've got a problem with it, try turning the mirror around.
From the movie Major League; Pedro: Ah, [Jesus]. I like him very much, but he no help with curve ball.Eddie: You trying to say Jesus Christ can't hit a curve ball? Jake: Let's not start a holy war now.
My favorite Jesus line.

Reason: awesome
Rick Perry's public exhibition of prayer doesn't follow what Jesus taught us about prayer. Why is Rick Perry ignoring the teachings of our savior Jesus Christ?
And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. -Matthew 5: 5-6
I find it funny when people know one or two bible verses out of context, and try to attack Christians with them.
If you understood the full scope of those passages, he was trying to tell them to no be like the Pharisees who prayed publicly for show! Your MOTIVE is the issue.....not praying publicly! Also read Matt 23 for extra background.
If that were the case, then Jesus would have broken His own rule in John 11 when He looked up and prayed to His Heavenly Father right before He ressurected Lazarus. There was a crowd there.
The pastor leads a congregation in prayer on Sunday, as well.
Get your facts and theology straight before you do this again.
If your motive is pure, God is pleased with your prayer. No matter where it is from.

That's the whole point. Rick Perry is going to run for president, so he's hosting a mega publicized prayer event for everyone to see how hard he prays. Obviously he hasn't read through the book of Matthew.

And you wouldn't know his motive unless YOU were God. Only God knows the heart. His may or may not be sincere.....Now YOU are judging self-righteously. you know that verse, don't you? and to be honest, as anti-Christian as this country has gotten over the last 10 years, announcing that you even go to church is the kiss of death, in politics.

Is Perry following what Jesus taught us when it comes to praying?
