First Ladies give up an enormous amount of their lives, privacy and time in official capacities and they don't get a single cent for their hard work. What possible difference can it make how much time they spend on vacations? If you don't like it, start a grassroots movement to change the laws governing how First Ladies spend their time, make them unpaid slaves to their husband's jobs. The freedom of a president's family to do and travel as they wish has never been in question before and it shouldn't be now.

so it is just the "economic hard times" our country is in that you object to? you would be ok with all the high living and jet setting, if the country was doing great?
this first family is living life in the white house no differently than any president's family.
even if they lived on a shoe string the money "saved" wouldn't do squat to help the concerns for our country's economy or budget, nor would their "example" of a skimp and scrape lifestyle make anyone change their own lifestyle. it would not be an inspriation to the country.
it would however open the first family up to ridicule for living like paupers. a president, no matter who he is, no matter what the economic times are is still the most powerful man in the free world. his wife can't take the greyhound bus.
if it makes you feel any better, the first lady does shop at the gap and decorated the family quarters from pottery bran and like minded stores. just like the rest of us "little people"

By year's end, Congress will have taken 239 days of vacation this year. That's not a typo--they will actually only spend a scant 126 days at work in session for the entire year--and they are elected by the American people to work for us. The last time I checked, the First Lady wasn't elected to any office, so it makes no difference how much time she spends on vacation.
