A quick analogy.

Gore is to global warming as Buffet is to taxing the rich.

They both have the ability to voluntarily live according to the principles they teach, but choose not to.

The difference between someone who truly believes in something and one who is simply a hack - or worse, a gangster - is that you don't have to compel a true believer to do what they believe in.

The thug, however, is the first one to grab a gun and assault someone, forcing others to do that which he will not under his own volition.

Dear Mr. Buffett: Bite Me

I dont think you can classify $100,000 as rich If you live in a big city like NYC LA and DC you will barely survive on a $100,000

This is the 3rd time in this thread that I've pointed out that Buffett's op-ed did not advocate raising taxes on anyone but the top 0.3% -- those who make $1 million or more.

If Warren Buffett was such a fan of higher taxes, why is he leaving everything to charity instead of trusting Uncle Sam with it?

It should be obvious to anyone who really wants to know. He wants his fellow billionaires to pay higher taxes too. It really is uncanny that the most successful investor in history admits that billionaires like him get too good a deal from Congress and middle-class people attack him -- as if they wouldn't benefit from billionaires paying a greater share.

I can understand other billionaires trying to protect their royal status but why should middle-class workers rush to the defense of the rich and powerful -- especially when one of the biggest ones points out the unfairness?

He paid taxes captal gains tax on $40M stock he sold.

Yes charitable contributions are a tax write off but at a fraction of their worth.

What does one have to do with the other, he is proposing universal tax policy. He puts money into charities that he can directly influence and see results.

did you read the article?

because he is a government stooge, praising both bush and obama, and stating that the US deserves its AAA rating (REALLY?), for his moody's involvement, for GEN RE, for hypocrisy stock dilution and derivatives, for a lot of other reasons.

for talking all the time about giving, but hanging onto his money-no, actually INCREASING his wealth personally.

Look, Warren, you've engineered a fortune. Stop trying to reengineer society. You feel guilty about being so rich? Quit taking it out on the people who want to become rich.

buffett also favors a VAT tax for americans.
Did Bush re-engineer society with the tax cuts in 2001? He is speaking to raising taxes on the top .3%?

He does not pay tax on the stock he donates to the foundation when they sell it.

He also gets a deduction for the value of the gift depending on how much income he receives from the foundation.
