Congressman Larry McDonald on Crossfire, May 1983, just three months before being killed in the Korean Airlines 747 that was shot down by the Soviets near Moneron Island after the plane entered Soviet airspace.

"The drive of the Rockefellers and their allies is to create a one-world government combining supercapitalism and Communism under the same tent, all under their control.... Do I mean conspiracy? Yes I do. I am convinced there is such a plot, international in scope, generations old in planning, and incredibly evil in intent." Congressman Larry P. McDonald, 1976

"There is a real question in my mind that the Soviets may have actually murdered 269 passengers and crew on the Korean Air Lines Flight 007 in order to kill Larry McDonald." -- Jerry Falwell, The Washington Post, September 2, 1983

Why not just shoot the Congressman while he's walking down the street and make it look like a robbery gone bad? Shooting the plane down near Sakhalin with all the various players involved to accomplish an assassination that you could do here with one guy seems like scratching your right ear with your left hand while your left arm raised over your head.

[more complicated than it needs to be]

Yeah, it's like the conspiracy theories that rightwingers set up a plane crash to kill Senator Paul Wellstone. Or the conspiracy theory that somehow the Clinton Administration set up a plane crash over Croatia to kill Commerce Secretary Ron Brown. Or the theories surrounding plane crashes that killed Missouri Governor Mel Carnahan or Alaska Senator Ted Stevens. Or even the car crash that killed Princess Diana.

Or the idea that the CIA orchestrated the plane crash that killed Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, and the Big Bopper as a way to kill rock 'n roll in one fell swoop.

Okay, I made that last one up. But if a bunch of masterful political assassins could figure out a diabolical plot to set up a massive plane crash to kill one target and get away with no evidence of their involvement, couldn't they figure out a much simpler way to kill one person? What happens though is almost anytime a famous politician or public figure is killed in an accident, there are going to be conspiracy theories...

Well... of course it was the Soviet Union that shot down a Korean Airlines jet liner... What better way to extend the Cold War?...

Would the plane have been shot down had it not strayed into Soviet airspace?

Congressman McDonald was second president of the John Birch Society, and that fully explains why this "theory" exists. Birchers live in an alternate reality.
