Wouldn't it be better to call mental health pros if you think someone is suicidal rather than humiliate and tramatize them? If that's really "procedure" then we have a problem.
One would think that stripping and humiliating someone who is already suicidal would be exacerbating the issue. Technology exists that can detect hidden objects inside a person. No humiliation necessary.

So every podunk jail in the nation should have a several hundred thousand dollar full body X-Ray installed?
I'm sure there's a company out there that likes this idea!
What about 4 point leather restraints? That's what we used on combative and suicidal patients in the trauma unit. I know nothing about this story and so can't make a final judgment, but it sure doesn't sound good . . .

No, it's a much simpler device than that. I actually saw it on one of those jail tV shows - the inmate briefly sits on it, and there's also a spot for them to quickly press the underside of their chin and each ear. Where was it? Riker's Island, I think.
Not only that, there are handheld metal detectors. I doubt they cost hundreds of thousands of dollars apiece, but I don't know how effective they'd be on small internal metal objects.
I'd rather they did it that way than to do what these people did. Do you think they saved any money by being sued?
Considering the source, I suspect there is a helluva lot more to this story. I just don't believe versions of events from those who are from the Right.
If this were a black woman, I'm certain you regressives would not give a damn.

Metal detectors might not help. Suicidal patients can be very creative with the methods in which they kill themselves. You would need a device that is quite advanced, not a simple metal detector.

Channel 3 news is right wing? Hmm.
Who cares what color the person is, police brutality is police brutality. I am sure you are just another arm chair activist who thinks labeling people in the simpleton left/right axis is really sticking it to the man.
If you want to put your money where your mouth is go to the Anti-Police Brutality protests in Los Angeles and get chased by cops as I have, spend some time trying to help crying mothers who have kids in prison due to racist mandatory minimum sentences. No, you can't do that, being a loud mouth no nothing cheerleader takes up too much time.
It's a jail cell. Anyway, not sure about other states, but here in California, there's a dearth of mental health services out there. It's not entirely uncommon that the local mental health services will refuse to deal with a person, and the only real option the police have is to toss'm in jail or release them.
So we strip them and make them be naked "for their own good". Wow. I think a quick frisk or pat down is pretty much all you need. Or handcuff them. I can probably think of a dozen easier and more humane ways of handling things that would be easier on the cops too...unless they get off on it I mean.

Not everyone is strip searched in jail, it is limited to certain instances, and I suspect in this case the reason there was only one female deputy available is that it is sufficiently uncommon that they don't schedule 3 or 4 female deputies to be working in the jail at any given time to do the strip search.
I'm not sure what your professional background is in law enforcement that allows you to determine what more effective methods there are that would absolve the Sheriff of legal liability should an inmate injure or kill themself and also still provides for the thoroughness of a strip search without an actual strip search.
