Newsweek’s 1975 story on the trend toward global cooling. It may look foolish today, but in fact world temperatures had been falling since about 1940. It was around 1979 that they reversed direction and resumed the general rise that had begun in the 1880s, bringing us today back to around 1940 levels.

Newsweek on the cooling world

Of course today there is no doubt about the earth warming and a reversal is only possible through human intervention. We must tax, regulate and protest all forms of hydrocarbon dependence out of existence before we fry ourselves like gnats on a light bulb.

As it is stated the rise in global temperature began in the 1880s. This was prior to the buildup of man made airborne pollution and decades before the internal-combustion engine.

However, what do I know other than the history of scientists jumping on and off bandwagons like whack-a-moles. I wonder what we'll have to fear in another twenty years... maybe a freezing equator and melting poles. Half the earth is warming while the other half is cooling (a fear sandwich). That would cover all bases.

There's that racist thing again. Is there any opposition to progressive views that can't be related to racism? Bill Nye (the Science Guy) just related global warming to; a guy from the US having sex with a woman from New Guinea "you'll still get a human" - WTH? My intellectual prowess can't make the connection between interracial offspring and global warming.

Aren't Ph.D.s supposed to be god-like or something? If I had a penny everytime I heard a liberal appeal to authority on climate change, I'd be rich like their new best friend Warren Buffet

It was the big theory of the day back then. A new Ice Age might be coming. There were huge snowfalls everywhere- even South Florida and the Bahamas saw snow. We were told to get ready and deal with it. Might explain why its tough to reverse course and prepare to plant Citrus Groves in New Hampshire.

Memo to the unaware: the media is not a reliable source of information.

And could someone please explain the logic behind claiming that there was a global cooling scare in the '70s implies that AGW is not happening?

No logic at all. It is kind of like how leaking fake records about GWB's dishonorable military service proved that he served honorably.

The information was based on scientists, matter of fact there is handful that were outspoken proponents of the global cooling theory that are now advocates of the global warming theory. Having said that you have a very good point because the media has totally overblown the issue in the present.

Are you kidding me? I know the excuse is we know so much more that 30 years ago but the same argument could have been made 30 years ago. The issue is not what we know but what we don't know.

We are conducting a massive experiment to determine the effects of injecting huge amounts of geologically sequestered carbon in the form of Carbon Dioxide along with other gasses into the atmosphere. The results so far have indicated that the Atmosphere is retaining more solar energy and becoming warmer. These preliminary results are mostly ignored even though the experiment started 400 years ago.

Some people want to stop the experiment before the results are conclusive. Others want to continue the experiment because they are making money by burning the coal and oil. So far the burners have been sustaining the experiment.

What is the right offering in rebuttal? A youtube video? "Common sense"? Puhleeze. You're being gamed by people with an agenda. The idea that human activity has caused and is causing climate changes is opposed by two different general groups of people:

- The business wing opposes this idea because it implies that businesses should do something other than maximize the amount of money coming in. They know full well what climate change is doing, but anything resembling corporate responsibility is anathema to the philosophy of free market over all. Combating climate change would mean combating the culture of needless consumption and expansion that Capitalism requires in order to fulfill its purpose of making the rich richer.

- Religious folks oppose the idea on the grounds of an expanded idea of manifest destiny. God put us here to be fruitful and multiply, and implying that we should maybe check ourselves or exercise restraint goes against that idea. Besides, the Rapture is coming any day now anyway. They also oppose climate change out of the general "culture war" ideals of simply opposing science in general.

Lightbulb Global Cooling in the Seventies Was the Global Warming of Today

Yeah, right...

One Newsweek article = global cooling "panic." That single opinion piece is the sum total of the denial crowd's "argument".

Here's a much better equivalent: right wing lunacy/science denial = 10th century superstition.
