One of the main people to speak out in displeasure is Maya Angelou. When that woman speaks, I listen. She says the whole thing makes him appear to be arrogant. Many other black leaders agree with her. I certainly don't remember him looking like he does in the sculpture. Maybe a black artist should have done that thing instead of the man who did one of the most famous ones of Mao tse-tung. I agree that an American black person would have been a much better choice.
There are always people that complain. Can't tell you how many times I hear that they made February black history month because it was the shortest month.
MLK was great and no monument IMO would do him justice. Yes, he had problems because he was human, but he accomplished IMO great things in his short life.
I don't need a monument to appreciate the man.

So you're saying he was too good for a monument?
Oh please!
MLK was a great man for what he did for the Blacks, but he wasn't Jesus Christ or Mother Theresa.
I wonder why these same people didn't whine he looked arrogant in this picture taken by a black photographer published in a black magazine:
Hmmmmmm

I was a drum major for justice, peace and righteousness
This message doesn't sound like something King would have projected. This, the man who had a dream and his humble message of truth is replaced with "justice and righteousness"? And then outsourcing our monuments to China?
Can the insanity of the people making poor decisions get any more rediculous? How many bad decisions are they allowed before they're fired?

Maya Angelou said that the inclusion of a paraphrased quote of MLK's makes him seem arrogant - not that the whole monument makes him seem arrogant. She's specifically complaining about the inscription "I was a drum major for justice, peace and righteousness" when in fact, King said, "If you want to say that I was a drum major, say that I was a drum major for justice, say that I was a drum major for peace. I was a drum major for righteousness. And all of the other shallow things will not matter." It turns the statement of "if you call me..." into a boastful-sounding declaration "I was a..." (that is Ms. Angelou's impression, at least). King's quote was shortened to make it fit on the rock.
That Yahoo news article you linked to has a misleading title.
