If they ever have another incentive program, why not issue gift cards instead? The whole purpose of the program was to encourage people to spend money and get the economy moving. A check could be put in savings or used to pay off existing debts. Put an expiration date on it so the money would be circulated as soon as possible. I would also require ID be presented with their use so they aren't used as some sort of underground currency (it happened with Food Stamps).

Why do people think that just handing out free money is some kind of cure all for the economy?

Also, horrible idea to try and prevent people from actually SAVING money...what a god awful shame it would be to have people with a little bit of extra money to be ready for any unexpected emergency.

Indeed it would be for this Marxist regime. No one may be self-sufficient, the government must be depended upon. There is no other reason to villify those who produce raw milk, plant gardens in their front yards, return from war, have Ron Paul sitckers on their vehicles, or whose children have an afternoon lemonade stand.

Federal monetary "incentive" programs are political paybacks to industry sectors and specific groups/corporations, nothing more. Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain.

What business would get those government issued cards?

Government cannot fix the economy they can only create problems with endless regulations and walls to go through to stifle growth. Get out of the way and let the private sector thrive like it was intended to do.

I think it's a lousy idea. If they are going to do it any ways, I think there should be some requirements on how and when it's used. Putting it in a savings account won't do anything to help the economy.

Handing out money like this does not help the economy in the long run. Period.

And having the government constantly tell people "go spend to help the economy" has to be one of the most backwards things ever. If people had saved for the last 5 years instead of being on a buying binge, this downturn would not have been as painful for as many people because they would have had some savings to fall back on. Why does the government openly encourage self destruction (spending) and not promote things that will be good for its citizens (saving)? Its not up to the individual consumer to help the economy, its up to the government to stay out of the way (within reason) and let business thrive.
