Only the employer suffers from that decision.
Seriously? Employees can suffer. If the profitability of a company is a narrow margin, upselling is a way to get more income, and increase the profit margin. Not doing so, can mean losing the profit margin, especially during depressed times. When the profits go negative, you have to reduce cash outflow, which can mean letting go of employees that aren't performing as well.

No only problem is; it is difficult to upsale to a population that does not make much money.

Most employees don't think that far in advance.

They only see as far as their next paycheck.

Back when I had a dead-end menial job, I thought far ahead and found the experience profoundly depressing.

IMO, there is no such thing.

In reality, every job, every skill has a societal defined value assigned to it.

One persons need has absolutely nothing to do with this value.

Government should never tell businesses what to pay workers. Government should have no involvement in wages. There should be no minimum wage.

Yeah, I finally got out of that rut, but it's hard to not be a wage slave when you're a rent slave, because you have to worry about making the rent on time month after month after month.

If you don't want to be a rent slave you can live out of your car.

That explains a lot about your attitude.

Nobody promised you a rose garden.

In a free market society, you are paid according to your value.

While there are some lousy employers out there, for the most part, they are fair.

A fair wage for a fair job.
The problem with this is that it does not take in account that people need money to live. When you pay less the a livable wage you then are having those people have to be paid for by all of us so you are burdening society.Free Market societies are just the tool of greedy business owners who want an excuse to pay their employees as less as possible.
