As an American who lived in Europe for 5 years, a lot of that has to do with the fact that almost everywhere in the USA it is almost imperative to have a car. Things are MUCH more spread out here than in Europe and Japan. We don't have nearly the same densities that you and Japan have and we drive much more. And if you look at GDP per capita at PPP than the USA has a higher living standard than Japan and all of Western Europe minus Norway and Luxembourg.
I understand that the US has been built around the use of the car, my point is that oil is a finite resource that is too precious to waste on unnecessary personalised mass transit. The US suburban model is unsustainable and things need to be done to reverse this trend.
btw, on average you work 20% more hours per week than we do (effectively an extra day) which accounts for the difference in earnings. Do you think there is a massive difference in living standards, apart from our lack of domestic space over here? I certainly don't.
Actually we do. We don't put that much emphasis on marx the way liberals do. You do know marx was pretty much wrong about everything, right?
Not everything...
So skewed to the top is wealth in America that anyone not earning millions almost falls off the bottom end of the chart. Is it fair to ask folk earning miniscule amounts to pay sums equal to those paid by billionaires?
This is a crisis foisted upon this nation by a tiny elite and their toadies in Washington. They should accept and bear the responsibility for the bailout. Instead, those who created this crisis expect to be rewarded for their incompetence and greed. Let the 'wizards' of Wall Street cough it up. Let each pay according to his ability. Bush, meanwhile, will be remembered as the right wing idiot who despite himself proved Karl Marx to have been absolutely correct.
From each according to his ability, to each according to his need!

Exactly, so when someone complains about the price of natural gas / gasoline / electricity, ask that person "did you vote for Obama". If they say yes, then respond "quit complaining, you got what you've asked for".
Yup, I got what I asked for & guess what, I'm asking for 4 more yrs, only thing is, I ain't complaining.

Yes, but nonetheless, my point still holds true. And the thing is that it almost IS necessary in most parts of the country.
This is getting off topic, but I'll leave with this...
After living on both continents (several European countries including the UK) I do think that there is a noticeable difference in living standards in the US's favor even beyond your lack of domestic space & if the current trends hold true, then the gap is increasing. But to each their own & like I said, that's not the topic at hand anyway.

Rush Limbaugh.......who else.
Sorry. You are wrong. I never listen to Limbaugh. I just read Obama's message calling for higher taxes on oil companies.
Higher corporate taxes always translates into higher prices.
I heard it was 10 dollars and that he was going to use the poor as ponies for his chariot as he cracks his whip of Socialism and appoints himself Leader for life, while Michelle eats ribs and tosses crumbs of pork fat to the masses.
That's right. He also hired impersonators to act like it was him and Michelle while they spend most time on a privately owned island in the Pacific and manipulate everything through internet. His recent video, where he claimed that the gass prices should go up to $10 were actually taken at Buckhinham palace that he rented for a week-end.

what are you talking about Obama does not set gas prices.... heck I live in Canada and pay ALOT more for gas because of fed and provincal taxes... here in Vancouver it is about $5.50-5.60 a gallon and right now there is no world demand for gas which is bad but reflects the world economy right now and there is tons in reserve but oil companies set the prices...

the only other way to travel around North America is by commuter jet planes or Rail and rail is slow and expensive and we don't have high speed Rail since it takes alot to build a track across the 2nd and 3rd largest countries in the world...the interstate and trans-Canada HWY are the only way to really travel long distances to other cities
