Federal report puts ultimate responsibility on BP for the catastrophic failures (Corporate Profits, Congress)

...leading to the worst offshore oil spill in U.S. history and the deaths of 11 rig workers, especially regarding the cement seal that was put in place the day before the explosion that triggered the spill.

The report, released Wednesday, said in the days leading up to the disaster, BP made a series of decisions that complicated cementing operations, added risk, and may have contributed to the ultimate failure of the cement job.

Of course it was BP's fault. I really don't think they needed a study to determine that. But then maybe they did to clear George Bush from blame.

No surprise there.

I would say though that it wasn't a lack of regulation, it was a lack of any real enforcement. BP had 760violations which means there were regulations and everyone knew they were violating them - including the regulators that reported that many violations.

Regulation sans enforcement is pointless and even dangerous as it instills a false sense of security in the government regulatory bureaucracies. This report is no surprise as this Obama administration has not taken responsiblity for a single negative occurence on its watch.

Please explain how Obama was responsible for the BP disaster, especially since when he even mentioned cutting back on offshore drilling until better oversight was in place, the right wing jumped so far down his throat that they were reappearing out of his rear end.

His appointee failed to facillitate the inspections required for the permits. There are literally thousands of posts on this back when the BP spill occurred. I suggest you use the search function and do your homework going back to the summer of 2010. I doubt you will.

I suggest you take your own advice...only this time have the sense to avoid getting facts from the right wing spin machine.

For over a decade the media and Republicans along with some Democrats have pushed the deregulation meme on to the public. We’ve been told and continue to be told over and over that if we just get government out of the way everything will be ok. Well, Bush and Cheney made sure to deregulate as much as possible the oil industry including rules for offshore oil drilling. We didn’t need any pesky safety measures. That just cuts into corporate profits and stifles capitalism.

So here we are. I suppose right wingers can try to make the argument that Obama upon coming into office should have heavily regulated the coal and oil industry. After all, if Obama had done this perhaps the recent coal mine disasters and this catastrophic oil spill could have been prevented. But we all know it wasn’t politically possible.

Due to lax rules and insufficient agency oversight, BP’s Deep Water Horizon was another “accident waiting to happen.” At the time of the explosion, BP was operating under a “categorical exclusion” put in place by, what became known as, the “Dick Cheney Energy Bill.” This legislation was passed by Congress in 2005 and incorporated most of the Energy Task Force recommendations. The “categorical exclusion” allowed BP to forego environmental reviews and to be approved for drilling almost immediately. Under the “Cheney Energy Bill,” the oversight capabilities of the Federal Minerals Management Service (MMS) were weakened considerably. According to The Washington Post, the Cheney regulations stipulated that a driller is “in the best position to determine the environmental effects of its proposed activity.” And, like the MSHA, the MMS was heavily staffed with industry insiders.
