That's the title of the CNN article about millions of people living in poverty in America. I've skimmed through a handful of comments on that page and the common saying is that entitlements begets poverty as if these recipients are stuck in a vicious cycle.

When I think about it, it makes sense on a certain level. Though, I wouldn't say that is the main cause of poverty. I own and operate a family small business and in one department, we experience a high employee turnover because if they don't like the job, they can always rely on government assistance. But that is always at the expense of increasing skills and experience. Not many small businesses look to hire people who have a gap in employment history.

Thoughts?

Maybe you are doing something wrong when you have a high employee turnover Ever wondered why people are leaving you so easily?
You seem to be more interested in what the comments say than what the article says... Comments are like posts on message boards, everyone has their opinions, but that doesn't make them qualified or correct for others.

Yes, I have. Three years ago, I was seeing high turnovers in that department and I took steps to remedy that. It is the job occupation itself that is not rewarding but must exist in the industry.

On a separate note, if you didn't find the article that interesting, maybe you should skip this thread and participate elsewhere....

If people are treated and paid well, they usually don't quit just like that, even if it is not a nice job, such as sewage maintenance

I have read neither the article, nor the comments. In your op you only spoke about the comments, not the article itself. Hence my remark...

The economy can never stabilize as long as the few working people left are taxed so extremely to support the many who can or won't work. My family sends a huge amount to all levels of government, and at the same time have to pay through the nose to hire anyone to do anything, no matter how unskilled. All the subcontractors we hired to rehab a family home told us they had to do all the work themselves, since all the the industry workers where happy collecting endless unemployment.

In effect, we pay a fortune in taxes to make sure we ALSO pay a fortune to get the tiniest bit of help to make our workaholic lives slightly easier.

A sick, twisted, anti-motivational, unsustainable, and perverted system that can do nothing but fail, as government continues to tax, devalue the currency, and borrow insane amounts, until it is stopped by total economic collapse.

Taxed so extremely? People in the US pay little in taxes...
Few working people left? Sounds like an unemployment rate of 90%

Ah well, then I stand corrected. But since you don't have anything else to add to my original post then I believe this is where we should end our conversation... unless you have anything to add to my comments about government entitlement.

I can certainly relate to some of your points you outlined here. Especially when our business resides in a poor business climate like California.

Depends on which segment of the US population pay little in taxes. There are those below the poverty line that pay little taxes, and then there are the ultra wealthy elites.

Now the middle class....
