That would depend on what state they live in, wouldn't it? Or do you not include states where same sex marriage is legal into your calculations. And that's really what I see as wrong about DOMA - the state of Vermont (or New York or Massachusetts or any of several others) sees the couple as married, but the federal government doesn't? How is that in any way 'fair'?

I guess I don't much care if Tad and Rick can't get time off work because one of them gets sick.
How in the world is extending a right that you and I enjoy to another couple in any way a "special right"?

<s> And I guess I don't care if you can take time off work to care for an ill wife, as long as I CAN take time off work to take care of an ill husband.</s>
See how that works? Doesn't sound very compassionate, does it?

Why should my state have to recognize the law that some socialist state passed?

That's why the founders believed in states' rights. If your state wants to be socialist, people can move to a good state. Honestly...I'm fine with a state doing whatever they want--as long as they force their idiocy on their neighbors.

Precisely, and if I may reiterate MsMcQ LV 's question, "How is that in any way 'fair'?"

This whole argument makes me tired. Why should it concern me if 2 men or 2 women want to marry or form a civil union? IMO, committed relationships, regardless of the gender of the people involved, strengthen society as a whole.

No, what's irrelevant is your claim that because a gay or lesbian couple cannot procreate without outside assistance, they shouldn't be allowed to marry. Once again I'll use my brother and sister-in-law as an example. She cannot get pregnant, knew at the time they married that she couldn't because of having a hysterectomy years before. Should they have been disallowed a marriage license? If not, then why should my friends Roger and his partner?

Wrong...allowing gay marriage or civil unions does not make a state socialist.

As long as I live I will never understand conservatives who label anything that they don't agree with as "socialist".

Well, it goes against what I believe to deny marriage just because of your beliefs. Sometimes civilization (culture) is in need of a shift and I believe this is one of those times.

So, now what do we do? Do you think your beliefs should be more important to me than mine? Do you think your beliefs should count more than mine? Or should they count over and above everyone else's in this country? Cause I gotta tell you that I really don't see that happening any time soon, do you?
