If they have the capability at least make sure the ships could stand their ground against our attack subs, etc.

TEHRAN (R.E.U.T.E.R.S) - Iran raised the prospect on Tuesday of sending military ships close to the United States' Atlantic coast, in what would be a major escalation of tensions between the long-standing adversaries.

"Like the arrogant powers that are present near our marine borders, we will also have a powerful presence close to American marine borders," the head of the Navy, Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari said, according to the official IRNA news agency.
Speaking at a ceremony marking the 31st anniversary of the start of the 1980-1988 war with Iraq, Sayyari gave no details of when such a deployment could happen or the number or type of vessels to be used.

The declaration comes just weeks after Turkey said it would host a NATO early warning radar system which will help spot missile threats from outside Europe, including potentially from Iran. The decision has angered Tehran which had enjoyed close relations with Ankara. And it comes a few months after Iran sent warships through the Suez canal, after the fall of former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, the first time the Islamic Republic had deployed navy vessels in the Mediterranean.

The Iranian regime is extremist. They view the world in stark black and white. The divinity of Islam vs. the non-believers, the "infidels". In the eyes of the mullahs, it's a war of civilizations.

The absolute worse development would be the mullahs' acquisition of nuclear weapons. As Obama has said "no option is off the table" to prevent that. For the sake of the world I hope he means it.

What could they deploy to our coast? They have a few second-hand or knock off frigates, some subs, and dozens of lighter fast missile boats. Even if one of their frigates did have the range to get near our coast I don't think they could support it. Their navy is good for harassing civilian or lightly armed shipping near their coast, thats about it.

Last time they decided they had a world class navy a bunch of it ended up at the bottom of the Persian Gulf thanks to US Navy.

That would be great! Another artificial reef system, which would be a habitat for wildlife.

According to Wikipedia, which may or may not be totally accurate the Iranian Navy has a total of 28,000 personnel.
Major combattants, as such , are 5 frigates, 3 corvettes, and 13 submarines. Not exactly much of a threat to the U.S. Navy. That is, if they even possess the seamanship to cross the Atlantic, or Pacific.
One USN carrier battlegroup could destroy the entire Iranian Navy in a matter of hours.

Anyone can flap their lips, including Iran.

When they start posturing, there is need for caution.

As they make a move a quick move, a crisp left hook drops them in their tracks.

That is why I don't fear a nuke attack coming from Iran, anytime soon. Israel would turn it to glass, in short order.

Iran is about as likely to deploy a navy off the coast of South Carolina as Iraq was a likely to be the cause of mushroom clouds over New York, or better yet, as likely as the US economy is of lasting as long as our occupation of Afghanistan... buahahahaha Who said those Iranians didn't have a sense of humor!

A carrier wing would decimate that "fleet".

Our acknowledged territorial boundary is 50 mi., recognized territorial boundary is 30 mi., the Iranian navy wouldn't get within 100mi w/out being interdicted and "boarded" for a "safety check" by the U.S. Navy, and again by the U.S. Coast Guard, which could sink the figates, corvettes and maybe the subs if they're close to the surface.

One USN carrier battlegroup would destroy the COUNTRY of Iran, much less it's "Navy".

And they know this.

LOL

Iranian navy? I spent 10 years in the U.S. Submarine Forces, trust me, that bunch of iranian camel jockeys wouldn't even qualify as serious target practice. We would probably use them as training exercises to train the new people.
