So long as they stay within international waters they can go wherever they please. If they get out of line we will have a neat, new artificial reef off the eastern coast. Might make for a nice tourist attraction. One carrier could probably defeat their whole navy.
Why should we restrict them to international waters. Why not invite them for a liberty and visit to one of our ports. Last I checked we are NOT at war with Iran.
The agument for placing OUR ships where needed, and keeping Iran's away from the East Coast:
As I stated earlier in a simmilar post, the US can put its ships anywhere it feels they're needed to keep rouge nations (such as Iran, N. Korea, Syria) from using force to threaten other nations such as Isreal, the USA itself, or our allies. The sad fact is that nations such as these in parenticies will not go to the negotiating table first. Force is the ONLY thing these countries respect. On the other hand, do we REALLY want a nation that has told the world publicly that it's PRIMARY GOAL is to wipe Isreal and the USA out of existance to have a military presence of any kind near the East coast of our country? To those that really believe Iran isn't a true threat to the USA, I can only state that there is no cure for your stupidity.

The Staten Island Ferry could take down their navy.
What exactly does their navy consist of anyway? I'm surprised they have ships that are capeable of that kind of range.
Yeah we discussed some in other thread, they don't really.
The majority of their navy is small missile boats that aren't for blue water operations, and their few capital ships are mostly 60s era second-hand frigates that larger navies would have used mainly as escorts. They have some older submarines but unless they make a deal with some other anti-US country like Venezuela that is closer I don't think they have the support they'd need to get near our coast.
Pretty much a big joke of a threat, their navy is not built for global reach.

If their Navy actually attempted offensive operations near our coast we wouldn't even need ships, the first thing they'd probably meet is mister P-3 Orion flying overhead and his good friend Mr. Harpoon missile.

Give them free booze and hookers. Serious. That's the way to fight Islamic fundamentalism (that and occasionally killing terrorists). Make our way of life more seductive. "You can maybe have your 72 virgins or you can have a go at this drunken co-ed who like foreign guys right now."
Back on topic, if they stay in international waters, no real problem. The Iranian Navy is the least powerful branch of a military that the US would probably be able to beat in a few a months. Obviously they should be watched, but it's not like it's a massive Soviet fleet or anything.
