Most other nations don’t care about our internal politics. They just care about how we relate to their nation. Extremists of all shapes want efficient government that works the way they want it to work.

I think you need to re-look at the subject.
And that's the problem. Extremists want the country in their image without realizing that they have to share the country with people different from them. Hence the need for some compromise. Compromise is not corruption. The founders understood this, why can't we? If the current crop of people were hammering out a constitution, we wouldn't have one because they're too small minded and petty to put country above party or to get out of their own ideological box.

mackinac:"The founders understood this, why can't we? "

Amen. They did not agree on the proper role of government, and one can see elements of many different viewpoints in the result. Enlightened people listen to those not chanting their mantra, and accept ideas from them , and vice versa, as acts of compromise. Idiots stay inside their own echo chambers, and fail to see their minority viewpoints will NEVER have common acceptence, as they fester in their hate over their inability to actually achieve anything.

In the old days, pre Tv coverage 24/7 on networks of both stripes, people crossed aisles and compromised. I wish we could get those days back.

The extremists have accomplished SQUAT, nor will they ever, since neither sect will ever have 60 Senate votes. Since they alienate the INOs, they always will fall below the threshhold to achive anything meaningful.
Always the sign of a someone that knows nothing about the issues. Thinks the problem is not enough "bipartisanship". Thinks right wing extremists are the equivalent of left wing extremists. Thinks the "best way" is to split the difference between an anti-middle class agenda and a radical anti american agenda. Oh, and all those blue dog democrats? Those who also happen to get the most corporate cash...are the best Democrats!

Splitting the difference is better than two hissy fits. It may not be 50/50, historically the ratio is a push-pull, but the TP will NEVER have 60 Senate seats or 218 House seats. Neither will the extreme left. So what in the world can they actually accomplish? They remind me of the 2008 BO supporters who asked about his inexperience said "He ran a good campaign", as the TP's sole accomplishment is to pick up 1/5 of the House seats. 1/5 cannot get their agenda through, and truthfully the other 4/5 will never vote for a TP.
