President Johnson realized that supporting this bill would risk losing the South's overwhelming support of the Democratic Party. Both Attorney General Robert Kennedy and Vice President Johnson had pushed for the introduction of the civil rights legislation.
Johnson told a Kennedy aide that "I know the risks are great and we might lose the South, but those sorts of states may be lost anyway." Senator Russell warned President Johnson that his strong support for the civil rights bill "will not only cost you the South, it will cost you the election."

Johnson, however, went on to win the 1964 election by one of the biggest landslides in American history. The South, which had started to vote increasingly Republican beginning in the 1930s, continued that trend, becoming the stronghold of the Republican party by the 1990s.

Political scientists have argued that this development was based more on economics than on race.

Although majorities in both parties voted for the bill, there were notable exceptions. Goldwater, of Arizona voted against the bill, remarking, "You can't legislate morality." Goldwater had supported previous attempts to pass Civil Rights legislation in 1957 and 1960 as well as the 24th Amendment outlawing the poll tax. The reason for his opposition to the 1964 bill was Title II, which he viewed as a violation of individual liberty.

Most Democrats from the Southern states opposed the bill and led an unsuccessful 83-day filibuster, including Senators Al Gore Sr. (D-TN), Fulbright (D-AR), and Byrd (D-WV), who personally filibustered for 14 hours straight.

So someone mentions Hispanics and Blacks and you initially think of criminals and illegals.

It's no wonder Blacks don't vote Republican.

If all the hispanics and blacks voted in the elections I believe the Republican party would mostly be wiped out. Unfortunately they don't. A black republican is called a "sell-out" because they are one. The Republican party is to the point that many of them don't even hide their racism.
I rest my case!

The majority would not be criminals if Ron Paul gets the Presidency and pardons all people in jails on drug charges.

Our prisons are filled with minorities with small drug charges and rules, created by Progressive policy.
Liberty is a funny thing, the elite think they can micro manage, as the rulers of the policy.

Makes you want to stand back and think a minute.

.
That's the difference between the right and the left.

The left doesn't believe that the majority of minorities are criminals.

We are taught early and often that only the Democrats are our friends!
Our parents tell us, our preachers tell us, the barber shop tells us, the grandparents tell us, our teachers tell us. And if you dare call yourself a black conservative, we then pile on that person as a "sell-out"...a "TOM" or oreo.

I've seen it.

Isn't it amazing how quiet the black community has been with things as bad as they are?? Even with unemployment nearly 20 percent in the Black community, there have murmurs. But shouts and screams!!

You cannot tell me that if a GOP was sitting in that White House that black folks would not be protesting in the streets! The Democrats know they can count on us! We will accept it and go nowhere else!
Just look at what decades of supporting democrat governance has gotten the black community.

The more in the black community depending on government is what the democrats want.

Those democrat policies and programs are destroying generations of blacks.
