..."The taxes are part of Athens' last ditch effort to avoid drifting into insolvency and to live up to the promises of austerity it delivered to the European Union. The country's vast debt means it is already reliant on the steady drip of aid it receives from a €110 billion rescue package passed last year, with a second such package likely to be passed this fall. But each payment from the fund is dependent on progress being made on the effort to clean up the country's finances..."
..."Belitsakos calls them "charatzi," a word from Ottoman times that can perhaps best be translated as "loot" or "compulsory levy." The term is meant to indicate taxes levied arbitrarily and without justification, such as the tithe once paid to feudal lords. "But I can't and won't pony up. It's wrong," Belitsakos says. "Don't you understand?"...
Wonder how long it will take for it to catch on here? (Yah, I know, probably never)
Wow, BigJon, that was a rapid reply. Did you even read the article, or was that just a dismissive gut reaction?
The article delineates the tax increases and government job cuts that Greece is enforcing to pay their debt to the EU. They are systematically destroying the business-owning middle class, and the business owners are rising up in revolt. This is for all those folks who are insisting that a VAT tax will solve America's fiscal problems, too...
I read a good story about this in the NY Times.
Even the tax collectors are on strike.
And they plan to collect the tax in their utility bills. Way to go Greece.
The more they squeeze the less they will collect.
I applaud their refusual to submit to further theft of earnings (taxation).
The VAT tax is nothing more than a scheme to enable the state with more money.
They don't pay now so why would it be different now? Since there will be no consequences if Greece doesn't close their budget gap they really don't have to pay.
If Greece were not using the euro , they would print more of their own money . It would loose value at the border , but they could pay their people . Now Greece has to "beg" Germany .

And Europe will keep bailing them out with more loans because they cannot afford to let Greece default. Caught between a rock and a hard place.
Got to love the Euro. If one falls they all fall.
