Bank of America notified me by USPS that they would be doing major maintenance on the website and it would be unavailable for the first few days of October.
I just went to their website and was able to log in to both my credit card and mortgage accounts. Guess their work is finished....
Are you sure? For a bank to have their website down more than 3-5 hours is unheard of. When banks do major website maintenance they usually do it on a weekend...and at night when the usage is low to avoid upsetting their customers. For BofA to have their website down for three days ("first few days of October") does not make any sense at all.

You are correct, a few days is far too long for a bank to have its website down. I looked for the letter, couldn't find it. I really didn't pay much attention to it because it wasn't for a long period of time - must have been overnight, Oct 2 -3.
Edit: Found the letter -- but it was not from BOA. It was from Chase, whose online mortgage information will not be available starting at 11 pm on Oct. 1, until the morning of Oct. 4.
However, my statement about being able to access my BOA accounts still stands - checked again just a few minutes ago.
Is something sinister happening with Bank of America?
Their online banking website is down for the second straight day, a never seen before incident.
One, no word on the media, barring few news websites, remote websites, not the usual CNN/Fox screamer.
Two, happens close on the heels of the 5$ fee outrage.
Three, BAC hit a new 52-week low today. The stock is getting pummeled, and only 2 bucks short of the all time low of 3.
Four, management is tight-lipped. My friends inside BAC working there now don't tell me a thing. Everyone's tight-lipped.
I have two theories:
One, they are preventing a bank run by angry customers pulling it all out and switching banks. Many are defaulting on payment today becoz no auto-pay feature seems to be working either. But thinking again, they can't do this to themselves.
That leaves me with the most compelling second theory. In a bid to cut costs, they offshored their production support to India/China heavily, over 15 years. And I am betting the offshore support is not living up to the challenge and dealing with this mess. Heads may be rolling as I type.
So what is the point in all that million dollar knowledge transfer? It's always been well-known that quality in offshore has always been sub-standard. Except that it's cheap and helps achieve EPS. But I see this going the way of Boeing now. Boeing transitioned too much knowledge to Chinese offshore that over 10 years they saw an erosion in quality and they came back to their senses, at the expense of millions of bucks.
What will be the outcome here? Only time will tell

The online site worked on the weekend, just sporadically. The mobile app worked all weekend.
Nothing to see here. Weekend maintenance, cause an inconvenience. yes, why don't we let banks not upgrade systems, and work with outdated security protocols, thereby opening your web interactions to hackers and the like?
Another theory: There may be an attack on the website by Anonymous. Whenever they sense a possible breach of the online banking, they shut the whole thing down until they locate the perpetrator. Well, if Anonymous targets you (over the $5 fee?), there will be wave upon wave of attacks. That would explain the multi-day outage.
