Every time this subject arises I find myself wondering just why it is that some white folks are so angry that they can't use this word? Why are they so jealous of the freedom of blacks to use a particular word that is not acceptable for their use? Just what is it that you think you are missing out on? I find it extremely hard to believe that anyone growing up in the U.S. would not know the history of this word and its usage and be able to understand why, coming from a white person, it would hold an entire different feeling and meaning than it would coming from a black person. So just why is it you are so anxious to be able to use it? Could it be because you DO understand it?
It's not that people want to use the word it's just incredibly hypocritical in how the word usage is policed.
In this specific example, a commentator solely due to their skin color is called out for quoting or repeating a political situation.
In other examples, people have gotten in trouble for even using words that SOUND similar (illiteracy for the loss) such as *****rdly which will most certainly be censored here.
Me personally, I understand the situation and frankly I'd just steer clear of it out of sensitivity.
What bothers me though is that this sort of "get out of jail free card" mentality for minority groups is damaging to intra-minority relations. When you feel that you don't have to watch calling people various ethnic slurs because you are a "protected class" that's where I find fault.

Well put, Mathguy!
You NAILED IT. - You've articulated the 'fine point' of the hypocrasy of the 'priviledged character' aspect of this ''pushed on us'' ridiculous DOUBLE STANDARD! - Truly, it's Evil.

We have freedom of speech and can use any words we like.
Now if you mean some of us can't use certain words without being told we're being insensitive or the like, that's different.
The day you tell me there's a word I can't say is the day I'll check my passport with a quizzical look upon my face,
just to make sure it says "United States of America" and not "North Korea" or "Afghanistan" or "Iraq."
Not to shock some of you but I did not see the problem with Barbara Walters saying "N-%%-rhead" in the context of the Rick Perry discussion. It wasn't being said to be flippant or insulting. Sherri Sheppard is a complete dult and this "controversy" only highlights the fact that she has very little to add in terms of intelligent discussion on any topic.

Luving most ALL these intelligent comments...like this one!

If what you stated is NOT truly a fact, then we are in 'Enemy' territory...and tyranny!!
