Essentially, it is the lesser of two evils notion. One can either forget about politics, since it doesn't matter what one individual wants, or one can "participate" by voting and getting involved or donating.
One group defends their "leaders", and the other side defends their "leaders". But here is the super crazy part: both sides are a part of the government. Insane, huh?
As a liberal I don't always defend the government, I think it's safe to count me among the most voracious critics of it when it comes to bailouts, endless needless wars, civil rights abuses, and cronyism. I loathe about 99% of the current batch of Democrats in Washington and you won't catch me defending their idiocy very often.
However I think, especially on C-D, many conservatives/libertarian types confuse my defense of the idea of government, with defense of the current government. Quite often on C-D I have to defend the very idea of government having any function at all. Don't confuse that with love for Obama or Democrats.
Ridiculous blame shifting floor speech by Dick Durbin. Why do you guys defend this?
Dick should be thrown out for causing a run on the bank, but liberals defend the government because that is the source of everything for them.
They are basically the communists of old still crying for economic and social justice while delivering lower levels of living and distribution of wealth.
I think that's misleading. You see all hardcore libertarians and far right commentators state unless you agree with their views about government, you are defending whatever was done by a government at all points in time everywhere.
See people would like to make things better, not destroy it entirely. If your car isn't working right you don't put a stick of dynamite into it to get rid of it right off the bat. You certainly don't accuse people that state it's not a good idea of being complacent on the number of vehicular deaths in the year. Same thing with government. You need it, and need it to work right...not get rid of it entirely every time some one doesn't like one law, policy, or decision.
Because without government, we have no civilization. Who's going to pave the roads, uphold the laws, and run the court system if we don't have a government?

Oh god, not this strawman again. Do you have any idea what this thread is about?
